1837online .....

Post by maddymoss » Tue Oct 18, 2005 6:47 pm

Hi, After several dismal attempts trying to locate someone on the 1837online site I thought I’d ask for some advice on how best to improve my search technique.

Arthur Henry / Henry Arthur Bolton was born, possibly in Southampton, about 24th Aug. 1861. His parents were George and Elizabeth. He immigrated to Canada aged 14 with a 16 year old brother around 1875.

I realise the information I have is not a lot to go on, but had I been looking for him on SP I’m sure I could have found him by now.

Any advice on how better to negotiate 1837online would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I couldn't find any H A Bolton or A H Bolton born in Southampton in 1861. The closest Henry Arthur Bolton I found was the following:

Born: Q3 1961
Place: Maidstone, Kent
Ref: Volume 2a, Page 443

Unfortunately though his parents appear to be Henry and Mary Ann Bolton in the 1871 census. I could find a George or Elizabeth Bolton living in Southampton in the 1861 census either.

Hi Rab,
Thanks for your reply. I'll use up my units then give this site the proverbial body swerve.
Thanks,
Jim

:o Hello Maddymoss. Sorry you have not had success with 1837 online it helped me to find my English grandmother her sister and brother who were new to me and their elusive mother. My method was to enter blocks of dates that seemed likely and studied what came up for matching names and likely dates of birth. I then tried 1861 census with 1837 online. That way I found my ggrandmother my grandmother her sister and brother the latter totally unexpected. I also obtained their birth certificates. It also helped to find my ggrandfather who was Scottish and seemed to have vanished as far as SP was concerned.
Although 1837 online cannot match SP it is a very useful tool if you are searching for English kin. Go on give it another go.
regards rachel.

For BMDs between 1866-1920 in England and Wales I found the Family Relatives site to be the best. You can do a proper search on the index. 1984-2003 is also fully seachable. 1921-1983 though has the same search capability as 1837 online. For BMDs before 1866 though it's no use yet.

1837 drives me nuts. I put the name i want to find and up comes a page full of a lot i dont want to look at or waste credits on. If i put a simple name in why doesnt it just return that name ? Is there a secret to searching on it ? please tell !
After using Scotlandspeople for so long no English site compares to it.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

1837 isn't fully indexed. They have only indexed the first name and last name per page so each search just returns a page where the name you are looking for could be. Unfortunately this isn't just a problem with 1837 but with any site I have seen cotaining the BMD indexes.

The slight exceptions I have seen are two sites. The search on Ancestry UK returns search results on an individual name basis but the coverage is't great. It OK for 1800s but once you get into last century it's very sparse. The Family Relatives site also provides a proper search for 1866-1920 as this has been fully indexed but only for this period.

If I need to search I use Family Relatives if the BMD falls between 1866-1920. I also use it now for 1920 onwards just because I usually have credits and it's no worse than any of the other sites. For pre-1866 BMDs I use the Ancestry UK site.
