I'm clutching at straws here!.....

Post by ellenavon » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:36 pm

Some of you may remember the long and convoluted story of my pedlar great great granny, Helen Sommerville/Stewart/Aiken/Taylor.

I have her second marraige cert, her death cert, and the birth certs of her 9 children.

She often used Sommerville (or variations) as her "maiden name". Have never been able to trace her birth or parents. Census records (have her on 1871/1881/1891, died 1901 pre census time estimate birth as 1845, and in Huntly or Gartly.

Her first "husband" (have never been able to trace the marraige - different dates/places given on each child's birth cert) was John Stewart.

On second marraige cert in 1894 she calls herself Helen Aiken, parents Michael Aiken and Helen Aiken nee GOWAN. Son Wm gave same details on her death cert.

Not the faintest idea where the Sommerville came from, but she uses it regularly on the children's birth certs, and some of the children have her maiden name as Sommerville on their marraige certs - although Wm, youngest son, who also registered her death doesn't.

However, to get to the point, tonight on another website, someone had posted a lookup for births of George Sommerville c 1839, and this was one of the responses:

SOMMERVILLE, George Christening
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 17 Apr 1839 Birthplace: , Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Recorded in: Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Father: George SOMMERVILLE
Mother: Helen GOWANS
Source: FHL Film 102921 + Dates: 1832 - 1856

(courtesy of "Anne in Scotland" on GR, from BVRI records!!)

Worth investigating further????

I'd be interested in your comments.

Regards

Ellen.

Why do I always do this to my own posts

Decided to look up Helen Sommerville nee Gowans' death -

and she died in Maud Poorhouse, New Deer!!

and she is is noted as being - wait for it! - "Tramp" !!!

Surely this must be the connection I have been looking for for months??

I'll post her death cert to the gallery, as I'd appreciate some help in deciphering her deceased hubbies occupation.

Hi Ellen,

I think it says - Helen Sommerville, tramp, widow of George Sommerville, bookbinder.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Ellen,

They obviously were saving on ink and meant to write "tramp-oline artist"
two husbands and nine kids doesn't leave much time for anything except bouncing around

Found this on the National Library of Scotland site

SOMMERVILLE & AITKEN bookbinder Glasgow
169 Trongate 1815
George Sommerville same address 1818
Glas Dir

SOMMERVILLE, George bookbinder Glasgow

Thanks Andrew and Sobil. Been away working and haven't logged in for a few days.

Curiouser and curiouser - the Aitken name is also a name that Helen (and some of her children) has used as an alternative maiden name. Many thanks for the lead Sobil. I'm off to investigate further. :)
