Death in English Channel 1890 .....

Post by tishgibbons » Mon Nov 07, 2005 9:46 pm

Hi Folks,

looking for help as usual! After a long and complicated route, I found a sheriff's inventory for one Alexander Rae an engineer who apparently died in the English Channel on the 11th of February 1890. My history is not so good so is there anyone out there who might know what disaster, if any, might have occurred to cause this death? SP Death Marine Records (no image) show the right name in the right year but the dates don't match. Does this matter and is the image worth ordering?

Hi Tish

Did you go ahead and get this? And did you find out anymore about the circumstances of his death?

Hi Liz,

yes in fact I did get sorted. Believe it or not but two misfortunates, both called Alexander Rae, died by drowning on the same day in 1890 - gave me the shivers! I eventually figured out which one was mine and then I got lucky. A fellow lister either here or at ANESFHS, who was looking for a relative who had died in similar circumstances, got me marine / Lloyds information which explained about the sinking of the SS Deeside. Then I got lucky again and got Alexander's will and then a 24 hour subscription to "The Scotsman" got me a report on the sinking and a report on the court case where Alexander's father sued the ship owners!

So it was one of the success stories in so far as I got a lot more information and "colour" than usual!

Are you researching anything similar?
