John and Mary Lieser .....

Post by Cathy » Sun Jan 08, 2006 7:22 pm

Seeking whereabouts of John Lieser and Mary Burns pre 1872.
They had a son Thomas 12th October 1872 at 28 Wear? C----e
Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham.
I am pretty sure these were circus travelling people.
John Lieser died 1899 in Hamilton. UR 4, Clayton Street, Bishop Auckland.
Any pointers to finding a marriage for John and Mary, and a death for Mary?

Cathy

Here they are in 1871.

1871 Census
RG10/4924 - Reg Dist Auckland - Sub Reg Dist Bishop Auckland
Enum Dist 6 - Folio 76 - Page 27

28 Wear Chase, Bishop Auckland

James Liecer - Head - Mar - 41 - Instrument Maker - born Germany
Mary Liecer - Wife - Mar - 37 - born Ireland
James Liecer - Son - 15 - born Durham, Sunderland
Sarah Liecer - Dau - 12 - born Durham, Sunderland
Mary Liecer - Dau - 5 - born Durham, Sunderland
John Liecer - Son - 2 - born Durham, Sunderland

They don't look much like travelling people to me - they've been in the same area for a while. Looks as if you're going to have to widen your searches to Germany and Ireland though!

I'll have a look for them in earlier censuses tomorrow.

Hi Mary,
many, many thanks.
The travelling bit must be further down the line, when John born 1872's
widow marries a showman. Thanks again.

See my post in your other thread, in the sense that it's not necessarily circus folk involved, but showmen and travelling fairgrounds, - who might well be on the same sites as circuses :!: :!:

No luck so far with earlier censuses. Obviously the name lends itself to mis-transcription but I can't find anything likely, despite searching for each of the older children separately as well as for John.

You might like to try for their marriage on www.1837online .

Hi Mary,
many thanks for trying.
When I get organised, I will get all my English look-ups together, and get on that site.
