Margaret Watts .....

Hello Everyone

In the 1891 census of Edinburgh it is recorded that my greatgrandmother Margaret Watts was born in Stockton-on-Tees. On her marriage cert she is age 23 and says her father is John Watts a ship plater.

I have searched for her birth but can't find it or her on the 1871 census for England. She died in liverpool 1912 age 45. Can anyone help please?

No I haven't found her yet I am begining to think that she was baptised and not registered.

Hi Heather,

The only Margaret Watts I can find that died in 1912 is

Margaret Watts age 43 – South Shields 10a 863 Oct-Dec – 1912

There are 2 other Margaret’s who’s deaths were registered in 1912 but they were both in there 80’s and only one in Jan-Mar 1913 but she was only 26.

Births Margaret – Stockton-On-Tees

Based on your information D.1912 aged 45 I have searched from Oct-Dec 1866 to Oct-Dec 1870 and the following is what I have found registered

1 Margaret Watts in Newcastle Jan-Mar 1867
2 Margaret Watts in Kent Jul-Sept 1867

1 Margaret Jane Watts in Elford Oct-Dec 1868 that’s kent also

1 Margaret Watts in Salford Jan-Mar 1869
1 Margaret Watts in Swansea Jul-Sept 1869
1 Margaret Watts in Sheffield Oct-Dec 1869

1 Margaret Watts in Wellingbro July-Sept 1870
1 Margaret Henrietta Watts in Dolgelly July-Sept 1870 (Wales)
1 Margaret Watts in Beaminster Oct-Dec 1870 (Dorset)

If its not mentioned there is no Margaret in that quarter.

Took a peek under the name WATT and I found

1 Margaret Watt in Hartlepool - Jan-Mar 1868 (which is in the Stockton area)
1 Margaret Ann Watt in Hartlepool - Jul-Sept 1868

1 Margaret Watt in Tynemouth - Jul-Sept 1869
1 Margaret Watt in Tynemouth – Oct-Dec 1869
1 Margaret Watt in E. Ward - Jul-Sept 1869

1 Margaret Watt in Newcastle T Jan-Mar 1870
1 Margaret Ellen Watt in Liverpool Jan-Mar 1870
1 Margaret Mary J Watt in Kings N Jan-Mar 1870
1 Margaret Watt in Hexham Jul-Sept 1870 (Wales)
1 Margaret Watt in Hexham Oct-Dec 1870
1 Margaret Jane Watt in E. Ward - Oct-Dec 1870

That should give you something to ponder over – Thankfully Margaret doesn’t seem to be a popular name at that time.
