Searching dates of John Gempton of Brixham, Devon .....

Post by DiDi » Mon Apr 17, 2006 12:55 am

:) Hi All. Hoping I will find out more of John GEMPTON of Brixham who married a Mary ?
Their children were: John born 1815; Elizabeth born 23 Dec. 1818 (my g.g.grandmother); Samuel born 1820 & William born 1822.
Elizabeth GEMPTON married William Henry MOORE born 20 Sept. 1818 Seaton & Beer, Devon on 25 Nov 1843 at St. Peter Port, Guernsey where they lived for 8yrs until setting sail on the "Sir George Pollock" for Lyttelton, New Zealand, arriving 10 Nov. 1851 with four of their children, Louise Theresa born Guernsey 15 Feb. 1845; John James born Guernsey 23 July 1846; Mary Emma born Guernsey 27 Nov. 1848; Rose Richeson born Guernsey, 25 Sept. 1850.
Slightest information or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou. DiDi

Hello Didi

On the IGI is the following marriage
JOHN GEMPTON
Spouse: MARY CROSS 22 FEB 1807 Brixham, Devon, England

Batch M001861. This batch covers the period 1556-1837, so you could find many of your family marriages here, if they stayed in Brixham.

A parent search gives 5 children baptised in Brixham, with you missing Joseph, 1824. Batch is C050121

If they married in 1807, one wonders why no children until 1815. The marriage could be another couple? and or could John have been away - soldier?

Have you looked for any of the family in 1851? There is a John, widow, 64, ropemaker journeyman, born Churston Ferrars, living with son Joseph, schoolmaster, aged 24 born Brixham, his wife & child. Looks to possibly be the father of your Elizabeth.

Hi DiDi

Also in 1851 is a Samuel Gempton, Head age 30 Fisherman, wife Sarah age 27, daughter Sarah age 7, daughter Mary C (Or maybe A) age 4 and Fanny E L daughter age 1. They were living at Higher Street Brixham. All born in Brixham. Wonder if Samuel is the son of John & Mary?

Best wishes

Hi Didi

Thanks for the posting - it's always nice to hear when something works out correctly.

Some of the folks on here may be able to relate the history of the early 1800s in Scotland with John being away from home (no children?). Might be worth a question on the history/geography board.

Napoleonic Wars happened around this time - so maybe he was a soldier?

:
Thank you Catriona, always hope it may help someone else. I'm over the moon with TalkingScot...I'm in grand company...no doubt about it.
Wrote my findings after a hectic day in Christchurch & some of my dates look all to pot. Will check them out again & correct.
Hi Lesley thank you for the web site re Napoleonic Wars..will have a look -see tomorrow when the 'ole brains more alert.
Thanks Trish, I'm only just finding my way around this site & took your suggestion re posting a question on history/geography board, only one I could find was the Scottish one..hope it's okay. May be an interesting story there ,which makes me leap with joy, as it brings our ancestors to life.
