Anti-English not!! .....

Post by joette » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:48 am

I have just read that Andy Murray has been inundated with hate mail because he stated he would not be backing England in the World Cup"any team but England as he calls it.
As a Scot in exile it amuses that a lot of English mainly of the football supporting variety think we are being unpatriotic if we want any team to win but them "We would support Scotland if England were not"
Sorry don't remember that happening before when Scotland qualified & England didn't (I remember there was hardly a mention of it all in the media.)
Why do people equate supporting a particular team with being patriotic/unpatriotic?
I do remember 1966 & that the streets in Faifley were deserted & we kids had a ball as all the grown-ups were watching football & the cheer when England won almost deafened us.
A straw poll amongst my rellies in Scotland is supporting England- 3/10-the rest are supporting teams with their fav players in.
England versus Scotland well I would want scotland to win every time.
I am supporting England as my 12 year old charge is a keen supporter.I had a secret hope on Australia as some of my rellies went there & ditto USA.
But hate because somebody doesn't support your team & I tell you if Andy Murray gets booed today well....& not forgetting if he wins he will be British&if he loses Scottish!
I'll bet all our overseas members are laughing their heads off at us.
oh aye & Rangers were robbed!!!

Many moons ago I recall an outbreak of complaints about the English dominated media describing Jackie Stewart as English..... following which he was then scrupulously described as British while his opponent Graham Hill was still described as English :!:

Funny all this 'patriotic' hype over sport. I am English (dare I say this on this site  !!) and have never been a sporting fan, but was certainly rooting for any English/British athlete in the 1972 Olympics when I lived in Greece.

We also recently had an Australian (of Irish descent) working with us, who gloated and taunted whenever England lost at any sport. He got his come-uppance when Australia lost at the cricket. As you can imagine, he was teased unmercifully. Personally, I really don't care, but when someone rubbishes your side the natural reaction is to fight back!!

Talking Football

Post by nellie17 » Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:23 pm

I am not a soccer fan such as a die hard but did watch it on TV its so funny here in oz we have 3 codes of football AFL?NRL/Soccer and when ever people from up north come down here to Victoria they always say arial football (AFL) and when the Vics go north to Queensland and NSW we call them poo jabbas(NRL).

There is a little competition between us to see whose got the better thing always little grudges but its never im not such and such we take the dirt dished and move onto the next one to see if we get a stir.

Its like when i say i am Taswegian (Tasmanian) people say OMG where is the scar or where is ya brother meaning incest and that all stems from convict days i laugh at it and move on but then you get the mexicans the Vics as they say they are south of the boarder.

Some people need to take it on the chin and accept who and what they are even if their team wins or looses.

If Australia isnt playing i barrack for whose name i pull out of the hat and 9 times out of 10 is the English. BUT....But....But....But IM AUSSIE

Go AUSSIE GO GO AUSSIE GO.

Born and raised in Glasgow, married at 25 in 1973 and came to England with my husband. My son and daughter are both proud of their Scottish ancestry, but they are English and, let's face it, apart from a four year break when I went back to live north of the border, I HAVE spent more of my life here than in Scotland.

SO - I have a St George flag on my car, one in my computer room window ( spare bedroom  ) and have alternately screamed or groaned my way through all their games so far. I'll be in front of my TV tomorrow afternoon again!

Scotland were also there, I would do the same for them, and be equally delighted if either won :!:

At least Scots can console themselves in the knowledge that there's never a need to book more than a week's holiday for tournament finals...on the rare occasion there is the opportunity of course :)

ooooooh !!! - hope I have not unintentionally opened a wound here - no offence intended folks - just cheering on a side I am entilted to choose in this free world of ours - especially since our home team did not qualify this time - never mind though - we still have the Calcutta Cup to polish for a wee while.

Best regards
