Morning everyone,
I have just uploaded a 1841 Census page to the gallery and whilst i can read most of it on page 2 - Philip Kellythorn (8 down) im really not sure what his profession is. When i glanced at it initially i thought it said Gardiner but now i see i was wrong - Any ideas anyone

Hi Wee Ina
I looked on the 1841 census but he didnt come up under Kellythorn for me so i looked at the 1851 for clues and couldnt realy see that clearly either - Corster - Caster something ? monger master perhaps. Being so close to the Docks i wondered if it was something to do with that. Looking further 1861/71 looks definitly like
CASTER or CASTOR
A person who made small bottles used for sprinkling salt, pepper, sugar etc.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Vall ... /occs.html
1861 clearer Carter Monger
1871 Coster Monger so................
Still doesnt really clear up your question but maybe someone can deduce the 1841 profession from this ?
One things for sure they were very creative in the translation of the sir name Kellythorn .
He could have course have been a CARTOMANCER
A fortune teller who used cards
- well it looked similar !

Off to the Chambers Dictionary again...
Costermonger: a seller of apples and other fruit; a seller of fruit and other wares from a barrow.
Could the occupation say garden aid? Never seen it written as an occupation before, but that's what I think I see in this one. Most of the dots above the letters seem to have bled through from the other side of the page.
All the best,
AndrewP

Many thanks Tracey and Andrew,
I have a lot of probs finding any kellythorn's on English Census's which i think is quite odd as i have been able for find loads in the BDM regs. Sadly the kellythorn/kellythorne/kellithorn Men seemed to have a fettish for women called Ann, Sarah and Elizabeth !!! this has meant me trying to use every clue possible to match the right woman to the right husband and in one or two cases the profession has been the missing link.
So once again many thanks for your efforts.

Using the "increase image size" function in Photoshop, it reads Pasteboard M.
This enumerator has consistently used the "M" to indicate "Maker".

Gosh, sorry about that; enthusiasm for my increasing skills on P'Shop got the better of me
I've cut out the
correct
one and changed it to a negative view. I can only say that the first letter is probably an E as an E(lizabeth) on the other page has a similar look to it

As soon as it is approved, I have also uploaded the full image in negative format. Sometimes they are easier to read and having the whole thing to compare with might help with the deciphering.
I've called it Kellythorn Census negative

Image approved - see http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-688
