Help/Advice Needed...

Post by Spider-Girl » Sun Sep 03, 2006 7:23 pm

Hi. Anyone on here know how to go about finding a living relative whose last known address was somewhere in England? I found out a few years ago that I have another sibling, a younger sister, and I just can't stop wondering.

The only information I really have is from her birth extract, which I sent away to Leeds for a couple of years ago. Does anybody have any advice or suggestions as to where I could start?

Thank you

Hi spider-girl.

Searching for living relatives is a little bit without the scope of Talking Scot, though we can understand how much you want to find out about your sister.

I have heard reports of people finding long-losts through a posting on the Friends Reunited. web site.

Have a look too at the TS post below

Best wishes

Hi Spider-Girl

You could try www.b4usearch.com. They have a find people section where you can obtain details from the Electoral Roll, I'm not sure as to how specific an area you must give.

I would counsel some caution though. We got excited thinking we'd found my husband's grandfather, only to find out that he had passed away a couple of months before our search. :(

Good luck

Hi Spider Girl,

I accidentally came across a site called "Missing You" which allows you to post looking for people in the UK. I've posted on it in the last week and got a reply from somebody sending me a list of the electoral roll of all the people with the same surname as the one I was interested in. It's not a very common name (Allanach) so the list wasn't too long. The site seems mostly to have people looking for birth mothers or long lost siblings or war time military contacts. Nonetheless it does have a genealogy section - remains to be seen if it is of any use. I can't remember how to post an URL into a message but I think "Missing You" in a google UK search should do it.

If it doesn't come back to me and I'll try to find it again.

Happy hunting!

Just a very important word of caution!

Although we often see the "happy" results of reunions on the news and telly. But what they dont show (I wonder why) is the problems that those contacts can bring. In a number of cases the "other" family doesn't want to know the new long lost. In other cases after the euphoria dies down, reality strikes and acrimony often raises its head, why did you come into our lives?

This is not meant to put a damper on those trying to find siblings etc that were lost for a number of reasons in the passage of time. But reminding people of the reality that there isnt always a happy ever after ending, in reality those are fewer than the "I dont want to know you" results.

I know that technically my request isn't really within the remit of talkingscot.com, but thanks for the advice guys. Didn't really know where else to go! Believe me, I will think long and hard before I make any decisions and I know not to get my hopes up too high. It's just that it's one of these things that is ALWAYS at the back of my mind.

Thanks again!

Spider-girl

I really hope that you have a successful outcome to your quest. I hope you realise that I wasnt trying to be a party pooper, just giving a word of caution. All the best and I hope we can all help in the quest for deid punters if that is also in your plans.

No worries StewL - I knew exactly what you were getting at!

Aye, deid punters are also of great interest to me - heading up to NRH next Friday (I hope!) to find a few more!
