Noticed a piece on Ceefax this morning saying Ancestry had got together with BT and were releasing "British" phone directories on-line today.
Whoopee Doo

or so I thought.
Couldn't wait to get home from work and search all night!
Just got home logged on to Ancestry and they are ENGLISH phone books.
Not a happy bunny now
Anybody else get all excited like me?

Hi Paula
Glad you posted this as i had totally forgotten about it. It was on BBC1 yesterday morning, they said the phone books were just for Greater London and no mention of Ancestry on tv so now i know where to look ! .
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi Tracey,
Glad to be of help!
Actually, just went back for another look and if you have rellies in the London area it must be great.
I now know what Winston Churchills phone number was in 1921

Just hope they will have Scotland eventually AND that my rellies were rich enough to have a phone

Paula ive been looking at it since you posted ! Its good to see they are keeping up the bad translation. They should have no excuse though as i assume they are copying from the type written entries in the phone books, not hand written scribble
Address: Looldso - should read 10 Old Square
Banister - should read Barrister
Eating - should read Ealing .........................................

Hi Paula,
Hopefully your ancestors were well off as I remember our first 'phone being installed in
1959.

Hi Annette,
I'm told my Grandmother who died 1939 had a phone but unfortunately I already know the address so not much help really.
Do you think blacksmiths and ag labs would have phones??!
No I don't think so either.

Hi Tracey,
There is no excuse for mistakes because I can view the original phone book pages and they are very clear. If you want anything checked on the original just yell.

Have you noticed that Scotland does not exist when some people talk about Britain.
Our American Cousins are top of the list here.
You often come across things in Newspapers and on TV where they talk as though it is only England that is British.
Maybe it is time they started teaching more Geography in Schools!!!!

Hi Momat
I'm sure all the US members we have here on TS who have Scottish roots don't make that mistake!
Best wishes
