Really Basic Question

Post by Miss Poohs » Tue Nov 28, 2006 9:30 am

Feel a bit embarrassed to ask actually  .

How do I go about requesting a copy of an English birth certificate.

I have the index numbers, I just don't know how to actually get them.

Hi Miss poohs

My experience with english Certs was "Yorkshire City Council "
I found that you need to contact the City Council Registry Offices for B M D of the area you are searching and Email them the request for Certificates with the index numbers and names.
The English sites are not as easy as Scotlands People nor as cheap!.
Hope this helps.

Here's how I did it online:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/#0

Be careful you don't order express delivery by mistake....it costs a lot more.

Hi Miss Poohs,

Thought the same thing myself the other day when I had to order my first two English ones.

You need to go on the website Nina has given you and use the GRO reference from Ancestry or the likes ie Vol 2a Page 1754 plus year and make a note of the area & quarter as you'll be asked this later.

You will be asked if you have the GRO ref. Tick that box as yes....assuming you have it!

You are asked if it is a Birth, Marriage or Death

Then you are asked for the year.

You'll then be asked info about the people concerned, names etc
They'll want the area & quarter plus volume & page no.

I think it's at this point you'll be offered a check but if you're sure you've got the right info then don't get one.

Then it's onto the card details bit.

It costs £7 per certificate and I ordered mine last Weds or Thurs and was given an expected dispatch date of 1st December.

They'll give you a reference number but you don't get sent email confirmation of this, just the payment, so make a note & keep it handy, just in case.

Think that's it....hope it's right, I've not got mine yet to know if it works!

Donna

We've found that if you can order from the local registry office you will get them a lot quicker than from GRO.
We've ordered a lot from Durham (who have online ordering) and they've usually arrived within a day or two. GRO can take 2-3 weeks.

The problem is if you get the record from the local office they are often transcibed rather than the copied image you get from GRO.

Thanks everyone - we don't realise how lucky we are in Scotland to have these things so accessable, I'm glad I asked :)
