1891 census Bristol .....

Post by Grace Carrick » Wed Nov 29, 2006 9:34 pm

Anyone out there got access to this census. I have been researching my Grandfather James Alfred Ward for a number of years and have spent hours researching in the Birmingham area as he eventually ended his days in Halesowen. An older cousin has recently been in touch with me and dropped a bombshell, by telling my Grandparents came from the Bristol area, so now my search has started in that area. The Wards originally came from Ireland, and I have found out that in 1821 a passenger route was established from Cork to Bristol. My Grandfather was born in 1885 and married Emily Phillips sometime around 1910-12 when they are supposed to have moved up to the Birmingham area. He was also known as Alfie so I'm not sure what name would have been on any census. Have not been able to find a marriage certificate for my grandparents, but my Grandmothers parents were supposed to be Thomas Philliips and Alice?, possibly born in Wales??Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Grace,

Do you know his parents' names?

In 1891 and 1901 I found two James Alfred Ward

1st in Stanley, Yorkshire, parents Isreal and Hannah
2nd in Oldham Lancashire, parents Joseph and Isabella

There are no results for his name in Bristol or surrounding area at all that I could find. Maybe they moved to Bristol between 1901 and 1910?

Hi Audrey,
Nice to hear from you, hope you are well.
Hi Mary,
thanks for your reply.
Well the news from my cousin that my Grandparents came from Bristol, was a bit of a shock, and I'm still not convinced thats where they originated from, maybe they worked there, I just don't know. My grandfather died before I was born and I only met my Grandmother once and she had as strong a brummy accent as you could have heard. My late father knew all about where the Wards originated in Ireland but never mentioned Bristol at all. I have been through LDS records for Gloucester, Devon, Cornwall etc and know there were quite a few Wards working in the tin mines, but I'm back to square one again. There certainly were Wards in Halesowen on the 1871-81-91 records and one family did have a James Ward born 1885, but I've never been able to confirm that this is a family connection, and as the record office have confirmed there are several James and Alfred Wards born in 1885, it could be any of them. Don't know the name of his parents either, In fact know absolutely nothing about his family, brothers, sisters etc. It seems that my aunts and uncles, all now deceased had little knowledge of their fathers family, I can hear the skeletons rattling, might be some reason for that. anyway many thanks to both of you for your help, will just have to keep searching!!!!
