On the free bmd, Ancestry, I have found the quarter and year of marriage of someone I was looking for. Next to her name it says 'no image'. Looking at 'others on the same page' would her husband be the name next to hers [he has an available image] or are they just others who were married at the same time? The year was 1874 if that is any help.

Re: English BMDs
Hello Rae,
in 1874 there will be 4 names with the same reference number, e.g. Tynemouth;10b 123 (earlier years had 8 names per reference number). You can establish the pairings by checking the 1881 census or by sending off for the certificate at £7.
Regards,
John

Hi John,
Thank you for that information. It looks as though it could be her alright as Elizabeth and Thomas Gibbons are living in Berwick in 1881. I was thrown with her marriage date showing 'no image' and his having an image.
I really haven't done much research in England as, thankfully because of S.P., almost all my ancestors are Scottish, so I plunder about in the dark over the border!

Hi Rae
The England/Wales indexes are alphabetical by name & husband/wife couples are nowhere near each other in the index, so you will never find them on the same page of the index. (unless through a quirk of fate they have very similar names which fall on the same page).
As John says, the only way to link them through the index is to find the 4 folks who are on the same page - should be 2 men and 2 women - and then you know one of the two women married your man (or vice versa)
In earlier years there were 8 folks per page so matching is a little more difficult.
If you would like to find the image for Elizabeth, try searching the full index for the appropriate quarter - which is also free on ancestry

Thanks, Trish.
