My MIL's birth cert arrived this morning - and you're right it doesn't tell you h*llish much.

So what have I got?

Her fathers name
Her mothers name (and maiden name)
Her fathers occupation with an address in the same box and her mother as sig with the residential address of the family.

What I'm wondering is - the address that's stated with her fathers occupation, is that his work address, or didn't he live with the family? :?
Beveridge, Bonnar, Burns,Candlin, Colquhoun, Dewar,Graham,Hislop,Jackson & Robertson.
Martin & Nelson - all Liverpool
Allison, Beaton, MacLean, McLuskie & Todd.
Grant, McEwan, McLean & Syme.

Hi Janice,

Could you post the image on screen so we can have a wee peek?

I've only got fairly recent Engligh birth certs but perhaps someone on here has access to older ones and may be able to give an opinion.

Donna

I don't have a scanner and Pete is away today with the camera, so I can't post it up Donna.

I find it weird that they have 2 addresses on it, why would they do that?

I'll try and get a piccie of it when Pete comes home with the camera, and if it's clear enough I'll post that

Hi Janice,

No worries re the cert, just thought it might be easier to look at it.

What's his occupation? Is it something that is likely to take him away from home?

Are the addresses near each other?

Have you ordered their marriage cert, as that was only a couple of years before, that may hold some answers.

Are you sitting comfortably? Good then I'll begin.............

As you know, my MIL was born at Liverpool maternity hospital, on her birth cert her dad was stated as residing at 99 Beaufort Street ( a residential address), her mum was the birth informant and her residence is entered as 144a Brownlow Hill.

Well - it turns out that 144a Brownlow Hill was a work house!!

There was a law passed, before MIL birth, to protect children born under such circumstances, they were to have an address stated on their birth cert that didn't directly state "work house" hence the address.

I'm assuming that she was there for the medical care, but so far that's as far as I've got - I plan to delve deeper, if possible

Hi Janice,

I just googled for the address, you may have done so already & found this link which has similar circumstances to yours:

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums ... -6957.html

As you've got MIL's birth cert you could write to Liverpool Records Office as the site about workshouses suggests that they may well hold more info about the circmstances for people being there. Their email address is recoffice.central.library@liverpool.gov.uk

It's never easy, is it?!?!

Still have you seen my one for the birth of my Gx2 grandfather? I thought, naively, that 71 Duke Street was a maternity hospital, turns out it was North Street Prison!!!! i don't think Gx3 granny was there for medical reasons!

All the best
Donna

The beauty of genealogy eh?

Did you find out about your G x3 grannie? I'd never have known that address to be a clink either - I'd have assumed a hospital too

Ahhh why do we do it?
