Any theories on Chrissie Jane Hodgeson in Saline? .....

Post by garibaldired » Mon Feb 12, 2007 3:08 pm

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas on this little conundrum :?

In the 1891 census Chrissie Jane Hodg(e)son is at the home of John and Elizabeth Harper and two of their children at Hillside, Saline, Fife. Her age is indecipherable but she is described as niece and born in England.
I didn't think much about this until I looked at the school records for Saline (thanks again Elisabeth!) and found she had entered the school there 19/6/1894 with parental responsibility given as Mrs Harper.
She is not in Saline in 1901.
Elizabeth's maiden name was Murie (parents David and Jean ms Dick) and there is a Hodgson/Murie marriage in Yorkshire. But why would Chrissie end up with her aunt? And do I detect some disagreement about this between the Harper couple ( plus they had children in 1878, 1880,1882 & 1884 then 1890, 1892 & 1895).
Am I making a mystery when there isn't one? But nevertheless I am intrigued!
Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

Meg
Was this the marriage you saw on FreeBmd ?

Marriages Dec 1883
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hodgson Jacob Scarborough 9d 711
Murie Christina Scarbro' 9d 711

Did Elizabeth have a sister called Christina ?

This could be your Chrissia Jane's birth ?
Births Jun 1886
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HODGSON Christiana Jane Richmond Y 9d 697

And if so this might be her mother's death soon after?

Deaths Jun 1886
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Hodgson Christiana 38 Richmond, Y. 9d 406

Assuming there was a sister Christi(a)na, would that be about the right age.

No guarantees these are the right people - I don't see a Jacob and Christina Hodgson together on a census though.

Wonder where wee Chrissie Jane went to ? On the death index on SP,
a Christiana Jane Hodgson died in 1951 aged 64 in Tillicoultry . Surely must be ??? Famous last words.....

cheers
Sally

Hi Meg & Sally,
You've probably already checked this, but I couldn't help peeking :D
Looks like he remarried in 1890 to Agnes Bailey,. By 1901 they have 6 children, but Chrissie is not with them :( Wonder who took her in next?
Regards,
Sarah

....snipped.............Meg
Wee Chrissie is shown as 4 years old in 1891. (That info primarily from the SP index, but I can believe it from the image.)

The possible death of her mother at or soon after childbirth could easily have been the reason for being sent to her auntie's .

Agreed :!: , - because she's in Dunfermline with another (widowed) aunt, as "Christian".

The match is perfect in terms of the parents' names ...............

Oh you are all so good! :D

Yes Sally that was the marriage I had spotted but I had missed the mother's death. So that explains that! Thank you.

And you too Sarah for spotting Jacob's remarriage and subsequent children.

David, how did I miss that one?! Presumably because she had always been Chrissie....... Elizabeth Harper ms Murie died in 1898 so presumably poor little Chrissie was shipped off to another sister. Isn't that sad?
And you've found her death too! Thank you very much.

Another little mystery solved. I love these little snippets that genealogy throws up.
I wonder whether she kept in touch with her Dad............:-k

[cheers] to all of you!

Just experience :!:

Chrissie is one of those awkward names in terms of frequent variants, so that I'd always search on SP the basis of "Chris", - with the implied wildcard for given names on SP, that means that the search engine looks for "Chris*" ..............
