Puzzling baptisms .....

Post by garibaldired » Sun Mar 04, 2007 7:57 pm

This is a bit of a sneaky post but I thought the experts on here would a) appreciate it and b)solve it!

My Irish lot emigrated to Manchester around 1845. Having tracked baptisms and marriages in protestant churches I have now discovered my gt gt grandparents seem to have had their children baptised in both a Catholic and an Anglican church over a period of 20 years. In one case the child was baptised in the Anglican church just after birth and in the Catholic church 10 years later.
:? Does anyone have any ideas about why they might have done this?

Regards,
Meg

Possibly fell out with one church and and went to another ? I know there were rumours of it happening in mine with one of my great grandmothers having had enough of the priest coming round asking for money when they didnt have any to give.

or maybe not...........................

Hi Meg: Tracey's got a good thought there. I've a friend who grew up in England and she says they were literally baptised in the 'church on the corner'. Of 4 children, none of them was baptished in the same parish, never mind the same denomination.

Until recent years, the Roman Catholic Church would not recognize a baptism done in any other church. The 10 year old, would have had to have been 'properly' baptised, in order to receive other sacraments, including marriage.

Thanks for those ideas.

They all seem to have married in protestant churches and it just puzzles me that they seem to have made a point of having them baptised twice!
Especially as later family members were fiercely protestant!!

Hi Meg,

My mother, her twin brother and her other four younger brothers were all baptised in the RC faith as that was my grandfather's faith. When my mother was about 10 years old he had a falling out with the RC priest because he was "on the Parish" after an accident at work and couldn't make his "tithe" to the chapel. When the priest was told that he couldn't feed his kids on the Parish AND pay his tithe, the priest's comment that he should think more about feeding their souls than filling their bellies didn't go down well.

Priest ejected (less than gently)! Grandfather excommunicated! All the kids re-baptised in the Church of Scotland and moved to Protestant schools!

Hi Mary,

I had to re-read your post a few times after misinterpreting the facts. I read it as the priest had an accident at work and was on the parish and could not feed his kids  and make his tithe. Then on the second or third read, I read the intended meaning that your grandfather had the accident, was on the parish and could not feed his kids and make his tithe.

All the best,

Andrew
