William and Douglas Munro ? .....

Post by speleobat2 » Sat Apr 14, 2007 12:00 am

I'm trying to find William Munro's wife's name and not having much luck. William was born in Aberdeen in 1871. He moved to London some time after the 1891 Census and before the 1901 Census. He returned for his father's death in 1905. The death extract shows William's address as: 21 Sotheby Road, Highbury, London. I also know that he married and had a son Douglas by Christmas of 1913 as we have a greeting card which he sent his parents in Aberdeen (our great grandparents Malcolm and Mary Munro). As usual, his wife is only identified as Mrs. Munro. William was a watchmaker by profession on the 1891 Scotland census. We also know that he was still alive in November, 1947 and living in England from his sister's obituary. It's frustrating to have so much information, but not the right stuff!

Any help anyone can give would be much appreciated!

Hi Carol

I found him in 1901 and at that stage he was still single.
London Islington Highbury Framfield? Road RG13/202 124/17
William Monro boarder single 30 Watchmaker worker born Scotland
Head of the household is
James T Turner head M 40 mechanical engineer born Wandsworth London

There are a number of marriages in London for William Munro, post 1901. There is only one registered in Islington
Marriages Mar 1907
William MUNRO 1b 523 Wife could be
MALUISH Florence Annie or MEHRTENS Amela

Any of the others could be his marriage as the brides parish would presumably determine same.

The only Douglas on FreeBDM in London was born in Mar Qtr 1905 (unfortunately before the mother's maiden name was on the indexes) Registered in Wandsworth.

There are gaps in the births 1910 and 1912

Trish,

Thanks a million! I'm just not familiar enough with the English records to work with them. I tried to duplicate your finding and couldn't. Wish the record keepers had put the parents names in along with the babies. After all, they didn't find these kids in the cabbage patch!

Hello Carol

The English indexes aren't much fun - especially as I was used to Oz indexes which also contain parent names - however - if you have a little patience you can find all the births - and post about 1911, the records contain the mother's maiden name.

The index images are here (no charge)
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectyp ... d/bmd.aspx

When you select the COMPLETE index you have a small screen for a name and date selection. The results of this search list a page for each QUARTER where your person MAY exist. The names given are simply the first and last on the page! so you have to select the image symbol & download each image to manually check for your person. You need to be somewhat "organised" with the search of you can easily miss a quarter or a name. Unfortunately marriages are indexed by both parties separately - which means even if you find one side of the marriage you cannot necessarily find the partner.

The FreeBDM project is making our searching somewhat easier & is similar to searching on SP.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

If you find a marriage (as I did in 1907) click on the page number & it gives the name of the other folks on the page - there SHOULD be 2 men & 2 women by 1907 (errors sometimes give other results!) - so you have the name of 2 women - one of them married your man! Often the later birth of children (giving mother's maiden name) will help find the partner. Sometimes it can be found via the census & sometimes by buying a certificate.

Given that the England/Wales census is due out by 1909 (I think), you could hope that he is married by that date, if you find nothing sooner

The lack of information on the birth of Douglas, could mean he was born outside of England/Wales - but without a census to check this may not be able to be proven.
