Annette
Sorry I didn't read your post correctly.
I have found them in the 1881 census - Bernard, Isabella, and children James (my grandfather), John and Mary living at 25 Newton St in Govan, but haven't found anything beofre that date.
Thank you
Bernadette

Hi Bernadette
Best wishes
Lesley
I'm just guessing here, but if you say Bernard with an Irish accent I think it sounds kinda like Barnet...perhaps the Registrar just didn't quite get his ears round the name when it was delivered with an Irish accent! It certainly happens a fair bit with Irish surnames...When Bernard got married, however on the marriage certificate his name is Barnet, although it is Bernard on the death certificate.
I'm not sure if Barnet is a 'pet'name for Bernard? Perhaps like me getting called Berny instead of Bernadette? What do you think?
Best wishes
Lesley

Here is the original post I was going to make but when I saw Bernard still living with his parents in 1871 I decided there must be 2.
Here they are in 1851 at Paisley from Ancestry all born Ireland-
Surname is Diver at Scotlands People.
James Dever 40
Bell Dever 35
Bernard Dever 13
Mary Ann Dever 7
Cathrine Dever 11
Mary Dever 60 Aunt
In 1861 they are at 18 Moss street as Divine. Bernard is Barney.
So now you know they came here sometime between 1844 and 1851.
I was hoping you might get 'lucky' and the aunt may have died in 1855 but at the moment I'm not finding any deaths that match. There is one of a Isabella McMonigle/Diva* in Paisley in 1891 of the right age for Bell. Might be worth a credit to see what the name is. Later......................I found her in 1891 at Paisley Poorhouse - Isabella McMonigal Devais so she may not be your Bella.
So..........I'm just not sure if this is positive enough for you to pursue it because here's how I found them in 1871. Only a look at the original will show whether this Bernard was married or not.
Name: Bernard Dormi
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1841
Relationship: Son
Father's Name: James
Mother's Name: Isabella
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 573/2
Registration district: Paisley Middle and Low Parishes
Civil parish: Paisley Middle Church
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 18 Moss St Bachtan
Occupation: Labourer
Name Age
James Dormi  56
Isabella Dormi 60
Bernard Dormi 30
George Robertson 29
Elizabeth Robertson 22
Ellen Bodie 30
Nancy was right about the name variations as I'm pretty sure this must be the same family even though the ages are a bit out.
I haven't found Mary or wee James in 1871 so maybe this is your Bernard and she was away with James.
All opinions welcome on my findings!!
Regards,
Annette
PS Bernadette would you like to upload Bernard's marriage entry to the gallery - McMonigle & McGonigle are just too close to ignore.
Later.........just seen your previous post saying Bernard was at 18 Moss Street so I guess that confirms this is your family unless he was staying with rellies. Is that Mary's sister with them I wonder although age is a wee bit out but her job is the same as 1861:D
