Free Irish BMD Indexes...if you volunteer to transcribe

Post by scotmum » Sat Mar 01, 2008 8:51 pm

...they will become available quicker!

Have a look at the details on:

http://www.familysearchindexing.org/en/index.jsp

I have just signed up this weekend and have already made a start on Irish Birth and death records.

So far, system easy to use and input (not too much actual typing).

:D

Hi scotmum
That was an attention grabbing title!
Good for you signing up to transcribe. =D>

I've just finished a stint of Freecen transcribing, and I have other commitments which I really need to give my attention to for the moment, which have had to take a bit of a back seat recently, but I do hope you manage to drum up some support.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Scotmum,

That sounds like a great way to do some free research!
We will be leaving Dubai in April so once i get settled back in the UK i will definitely look into volunteering on the link you posted. Is it something you can do off and on - or do you have to spend an allotted time on it?
I have a fair amount of irish rellies lurking around - it's finding the area they lived in Ireland before they moved to other parts of the world which is the hardest part.
Good luck,

Ailsa

Seemingly it has been on the go for some time now but amazingly, despite doing a lot of Irish research myself, I only heard tell of it a few days ago on another family history forum that I use, so no credit to me but just felt it worth sharing with folks here as Irish research needs any boost it can get.

You can choose to download random urgent work, or choose more specific work such as Irish Death Index from 1906. You cannot choose specific year or names.

I downloaded my first page of Irish work yesterday. All info on page is typed so easy to read (may not be the case for all records) . About 375 names in total. The software then shows that you have a week to complete, if possible. you can set/adjust your own target. It was all very straightforward and so far I have over 50% of this completed. Decided to try also downloading a Birth Index as well, and also straightforward. You can then work a bit on both, and dip in and out as you wish.

As you work, you can see what percentage you have completed. I managed about 20% of the marriage record, so think I should, without too much time needing spent on it, finish both within the 7 days. If not, you can return what you have finished up to for someone else to continue.

Seriously though, if you can only manage maybe 20/30 names a day, it is still worth doing. Perhaps set yourself a target of doing this when you first use your computer each day. I did mine yesterday whilst waiting for lunch to cook and some later when hubby was doing dinner.

When the records become available to public for use, it will feel well worth the effort.

Hi Scotmum,

Just a posting to say you persuaded me to volunteer, i have signed up and am working on the irish death index. Which is quite straightforward as you said. Once i know my way around the site i will move on to something a bit more adventurous
Thanks for the tip :)

That was meant for you too Scotmum!

I managed to fix my gremlins in my computer and submitted my first batch. Hopefully it was ok.

Not sure if it is the best way, but I have just bookmarked the link in my first post and then use the start indexing button.

You can then choose to work on or off-line.
