Griffith's Valuation

Post by Andrew C. » Tue Jun 10, 2008 9:18 am

Does anyone have acces to GV who could do a look up for me, please? It is probably a long shot however my great grandfather's, father John Chambers is listed as a farmer on my great grandfather's wedding certificate. My great grandfather was married in Loughgilly so I am presuming his father farmed around Lougilly/Markethill.

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I don't have much more information. Mt Great Grandfather John Chambers was born in Loughgilly in 1878 and his father is given as also John Chambers occupation farmer. I have a hunch his father was a lot older than his mother so I was hoping that there meay have been an entry in the Valuation for John Chambers or perhaps his father in the Looughgilly/ Markethill area of Armagh.

Not too many Chambers in Armagh at time of Griffiths. If you type in the surname and choose Armagh from box in following link, you can see index for same, including four Loughgilly entries:

Thanks for that, the locations given are a bit confusing as I wouldn't have thought they were all in the parish of Loughgilly as they are quite widespread, some of them don't even appear to be in Armagh however I will take a closer look and see if there are any possibilities.

The search should return a list of 20 plus Chambers entries for County Armagh. Of these, 5 are specifically for townlands in Loughgilly Parish. Of the 5 townlands recorded, 4 were certainly in the Parish - you can see a townlands list for Loughgilly at:

http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/t ... nty=Armagh

The fifth townland listed, Lisadian, could be a mis-transcription or mistake. There was a Lisadian townland in Eglish Parish, County Armagh.

Thanks for that I was just looking at a map for those nearest Markethill, Loughgilly is never on any map I look at and the places mentioned seemed quite far apart but perhaps loughgilly parish is quite widespread. I am drawn to Belleek if only as my gran was collector of the pottery however I think that is a different Belleek in Fermanagh.

There are two entries in Craigs (parish and townland), co. Antrim which I'd like to pursue - they are
Mc Loughlin William Craigs Craigs Antrim
Mc Loughlin Robert Craigs Craigs Antrim

Does the ancestry subscription give access to details or only to the index? Can anybody advise on this, please?

Answering my own question here - I managed to get online on a library Ancestry subscription today, and all they have is the index - which is of course free elsewhere on the internet.

So will restate my previous plea - does anybody have access to GV for Antrim who could please take a look at these two 'Mc Loughlin' entries for Craigs, and tell me what they say..

Or can anybody tell me where I might access the Griffith's Valuation records?

(I see from the Ancestry material that there are also tithe rolls which were done a little earlier...)

Just a suggestion, but have you tried Irish Origins site?

http://www.originsnetwork.com/help/popup-aboutio.htm

They charge 4.50 for 72 hours access.

Don't know if this is what you need, but thought it worth mentioning in case it would help.
