Bellaghy Historical Society

Post by Rockford » Sun Aug 03, 2008 4:02 pm

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of this Society, or have up-to-date contact details for them? It appears that they produced a book about the Bellaghy area 'as it used to be' and it would be great to get a copy as my great grandfather came from there.

I found a website, but the email contact disnae work!

Best wishes

Hello Brian,

This looks like the book complete with a snail mail address for if things get desperate.
http://www.fuls.org.uk/socpublications.html

The address should be current as Mrs Lowry is 2007/08 Hon. Sec.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for this. The email address is the same one that wouldn't work, but I've sent off a letter and we'll see what happens!

Best wishes

Hi Brian,

You should try to get in touch with George McIntyre, a real gentleman, who researches the parish of Drumlamph adjacent to Bellaghy, and who, also maintains the Bellaghy Historical Society website. He has some info on folk from Bellaghy at his site - see http://georgemcintyre.tripod.com/id16.html . My granny's lot (Curry/Currie) came from Castledawson, Bellaghy and Knockloughrim, and George has been extremely helpful with my research. George can be contacted at George.McIntyre@tesco.net (working as of this time last year).

Regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

My relations were Burnsides and Allens, who seem to have had a connection with Killyberry, which is between Bellaghy and Castledawson. I haven't found any Curries yet  !

I've had a look at George McIntyre's website - that's where I originally found out about the Bellaghy book, but unfortunately the email link relating to the book wasn't working. I'll try George direct, as there is at least one Burnside listed on his site.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Best wishes

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know that I've been in touch with Patricia Lowry and George McIntyre and I now have a copy of the Bellaghy book. It doesn't appear to mention any relations, but gives a good picture of the local history and area.

I've also been able to confirm the names of both great-great-great grandfathers from a marriage certificate and now know that distant relations still live and farm in the Bellaghy area.

And here last week I knew nothing except my great grandparents names!

Best wishes

Hi Brian,

Any mention in the book of any Currys or Hendersons in the area?! :)

Hi Chris,

I've had a look and I can't see any mention. The book comprises a number of themed chapters covering everything from agriculture, the diatomite industry (which seems to have been a big industry), the spade mill at Edenreagh and chapters covering health, education and the various churches. Each chapter seems to have been written by a different person and it gives a flavour of the area, rather than a detailed historical account.

I actually bought two books, as I planned to give one to my grandmother, however, I think it would be a better gift if it were more descriptive of the times when her father was growing up in the 1870s. He left Ireland in the 1890s and some of the book covers a much later period. If you would like the second copy, send me a pm and it's yours!

Best wishes

Chris,

Were your Hendersons from County Londonderry? If yes, what timescale?
