My mother's great grandfather came from Scotland. It is a long shot, as we don't know whereabouts in Scotland he was from. All we know is that he was Catholic, he was born in or around 1849 and his father was called Patrick.

He came to Dublin, possibly through the North, and worked as a servant in a house in Monkstown. He met his wife there and my mother's grandmother was born in 1870. Her name was Anna.

Would anyone have any idea where I could start or will I give up now!!!

Welcome to Talking Scot Cathy!

For a Start - Don't give up too easily, we love a brick-wall here ](*,)

The best place I can suggest is having a look for him in the 1851 census, and hope that the family was still in the country then. I can't see anyone obvious on FreeCen, but that isn't complete yet. You should try on Scotland's People.

Unfortunately if he was born before Stautary registration began in 1855 and if Catholic he won't appear on the IGI or on Parish records.

Hi Wilma

Thanks for your words of encouragement!!

He was in Scotland in 1851. He didn't move to Ireland until he was in his late teens/early 20s.

I will try that, thanks.

Well, you may just have 2 chances at finding him - in the 1861 census too.
Lets hope that if you do track him there, that he has several younger siblings to help you along the way!
