Will Calendars - Londonderry, Armagh & Belfast

Post by Rockford » Mon Oct 13, 2008 1:20 pm

Hi everyone,

Apologies if this has been posted before - I had a quick look but couldn't find anything.

The PRONI website is giving free access to some of the information held in the District Probate Registries for Londonderry, Armagh and Belfast between 1858 to roughly 1900 [although I've found three from 1911]. The information is in index form, but you can see some information on whose will it is and how much the person's effects were worth.

I found enough on these snippets to believe that I've found two of my great great grandfathers.

It's apparently part of a process that will eventually see the wills themselves go online. In the meantime, the offer a research service under the Freedom of Information Act. I've just contacted them and asked for a quote to send copies of two wills, so I'll give an update when I get this.

The wills information can be accessed right of the main page [ www.proni.gov.uk ] at the top right hand corner.

I hope this is useful to someone else!

Best wishes

Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for putting up the link! :)

I have seen this one before but haven't found anything myself. It is an interesting site though and I'm sure it will be beneficial to many.

Regards,

Just a quick update.....

I sent off the online form and was contacted the same day by a very helpful member of the PRONI staff via email. She explained that only one of the people I was interested in had left a will, the other had died intestate so a letter of administration had been needed so did I want a copy of that?

The price of a copy will is roughly five pounds and the letter of administration is about the same. The information will obviously depend on who drafted them and what the person wished to include, so I'll only know when i get them if it was a good investment!!

Best wishes

Brian
