Help - Samuel Maxwell

Post by diane.campbell » Tue Oct 28, 2008 2:50 pm

Hiya

My GGGreat Grandfather Samuel Maxwell and grandmother Isabella Maxwell nee Ball came from Ireland to Girvan in the early 1840's - is there any way in which I can find out where in Ireland they were born / lived / married ?

Thanks

Diane :)

One way is: from a child's birth certificate if they had any children in Scotland after 1855 - that should say where the parents were married.

Another could be the census records, depending on how much detail recorded.
Or maybe a parent or other relation crops up in the household on census night.

On FreeCen this family appear :

1851
Place: Girvan -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 16
Civil Parish: Girvan
Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Girvan
Folio: 0 Page: 25 Schedule: 94
Address: Back Street Doune Park

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MAXWELL Samuel Head M M 46 Cotton Weaver Ireland - -
MAXWELL Isabella Wife M F 46 Cotton Winder Ireland - -
MAXWELL Grace Dau U F 18 Household Work Ayrshire - Girvan
MAXWELL Margaret Dau - F 7 Scholar Ayrshire - Girvan
MAXWELL Robert Son - M 3 Ayrshire - Girvan
SCOTT Susannah Lodger U F 40 Cotton Weaver Unknown - - where born not enumerated

If this is them then there is plenty scope for finding a little more info.

Hi Diane,

In 1861, Samuel and Isabella were in Girvan with three children, a grandchild, and six boarders. According to Ancestry, the Irish birthplaces are listed only as Ireland. In 1871, they were in Girvan with one of their offspring and a different grandchild. Still no improvement on "Ireland".

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello, Diane. I have Hays and McCullochs who came to Girvan from Ireland about that time. Censuses always just say 'Ireland'as their birth place, but I was lucky (!) enough to find a McCulloch who died in 1855 when the death entry included the place they'd been born, from which I learned they'd come from County Down. If you can find anybody who died in 1855, you might be lucky!

I didn't have much luck with Hugh Glacken's death details. He died in Glasgow city poorhouse. The only details on there were his cause of death - disease of the brain, three years.

I have visited the Mitchell Library in the hope of getting more details from poor relief applications the family made but again no luck.

The 1851 census said he was born in 'Derry' Ireland but I am still looking.

all the best
