Macklam family living Dublin, please early 1900s

Post by Johnmac » Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:04 pm

It is just a long shot, but does anyone have any information of a family by the name of Macklam living in or on the outskirts of Dublin in early 1900s. Had heard about 30 years ago there had been a family of this name there. :?

Hello
There are no Macklams at all anywhere in Ireland on either the 1901 or 1911 Irish censuses. The nearest I could find (using wildcards) was a 29yo Henry Malam who was a boarder in Valleta Avenue in Dublin on the 1901 Irish census.

The 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses are free to view, so it may be worth it to 'play around' with alternate spellings of Macklam - you may just get lucky.

Cheers

There’s a death notice in The Irish Times, [Dublin] 02 Sep 1926, for a Marion Macklan, wife of John Macklan, Draper, and mother of Thomas J Macklan, both of Carrickmacross. She was buried at New Cemetery there.

I think that’s a fair way from Dublin. They are on the 1901 and 1911 census as Macklin and that’s how he’s signed it so probably a newspaper error.

The only Macklan on the census appears to be a soldier in Co. Kildare.

Hi Alan, Many thanks for your information regarding the Macklan family of Carrickmacross, I think they may be rellies, although the name is spelt differently; this is what is causing me confusion in my researches for Macklam's both in Ireland and Scotland. In my own immediate family, my father, his younger brother and sister all spelt the name differently. My Dad spelling the name - Macklam - it makes researching interesting to say the least. Sorry to waffle on. Once again many thanks for your help. Best Wishes Johnmac :D

hi john,
my father Harry was born in belfast in 1912, his father (also a Harry b1888)and mother had moved across from west hartlepool to work for a few years in the Harland and Wolff shipyard building the titanic and its sister ship. They along with others travelled across to Belfast following work in what was probably a recruitment drive to get skilled ship builders to complete the two big contracts the yard had on its books at the time. My dad's brother Robert was born in 1913 in West Hartlepool on the families return to England. This may be the family you are looking for based albeit temporily for a few years in Belfast?
I too am interested in the Macklam Family tree and like you are directly descended from the John Macklam b1769. I have been searching for the illusive birth place of the man and have recently come across an 1851 scottish census doc which cites two brothers a William Macklam b1770 and Duncan Macklam b1780 living in Catrine Ayrshire but having a birthplace of Drummond Sterlingshire. As you know the macklam name is not widely found in Scotland although there are a couple of instances around 1750 in Baldernock with the same exact Macklam spelling.
I too am retired and are about to go to scotland for a couple weeks with a view to sniffing around the Drummond area in the hope I can unearth some more clues. It would be interesting to share our information on the Macklam family history.
