Irish/Scottish Connections .....

Post by Steven Dougan » Sun Sep 04, 2005 2:48 pm

Morning Fellow Scots,

how can I find out if my gr.gr.grandfather was born in Irland or not?

All I have is his Marriage Certificate from 1884, with no indication to date and place of birth, or any indication of date of death (it was before 1903)(See "Looking for Dougan in scotland or Ireland").

I would be obliged if anyone can give me tips to online resources.

As I live in German, I dont have the opportunity to visit Libraries presonally.

Thankyou in advance.

and Thankyou Scozzie for giving me the tip of this Site at the Scottish Mining group.

Hello Steven

Have you tried the IGI on www.familysearch.org or www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Have you found him on a census?

1881 or 1891 would be best. Scotlands People will have them if he was living in Scotland at that time.

That should say where he was born, more specific if it's in Scotland but the country if not.

If you give us the details from his marriage certificate somebody may be able to give more specific pointers.
Wilma

Hi Wilma,

that is my problem, he does not apear on any cencus, which gives me the inclination he might have come from Ireland.

I found his wife on the 1881 census for Old Monkland as a sweet sixteen year old but no sign of gr.gr.grandad :(

Steven,

I'm based in Ireland and might might be able to help. Our records are not available on-line - there's no system like the scottish one. Why do you think he came from Ireland? Is it just that you can't find him in a census because that's not unusual anyway. I have scores of Mitchells who appear on one census and not the next one but they seem to be still alive!

While I'm on I notice Mitchell in your list. Where were they from? Mine were from Crathie and they moved from there either to Strathdon, to ABerdeen to Banchory-Ternan and to Ireland. Some just disappeared so every time I see the Mitchell name on this site I ask.

Regards,

Tish

Irish connections

Post by Steven Dougan » Thu Sep 15, 2005 5:00 pm

Hi Tish,

well the reasons I think there might be an Irsh connection are as follow;

1. my Grandmother was from an Irish catholic family (Tracy)
2. my gr. Grandmother was from an Irish Catholic family (finnie)
3. although my gr.gr. Grandparents were married in the Church of Scotland my gr.gr.Grandmothers parents were married on st.Patricks day and had a another daughter named Bridget. sounds extremely Irish catholic to me :-).

Although I was born and christened into the church of Scotland, I am by no means biased or grieved that my ancestors may be Irish or Catholic (at one time or another we all were catholic).

these facts and the fact that I cannot find the birth date or place of my gr.gr.Grandfather John Dougan or his Father James Dougan made me broaden my thoughts and surmise that there may be an Irish or even illegitimate connection.

The Mitchell side of our family comes from my mother, I have traced them back through Dumfries and Kirkcudbright to Peebles in 1829. it seems a lot easier tracing people in Scotland than anywhere else.

If you look further down the Gereral Discussion side you wil find a Topic I wrote "Looking for Dougan in Scotland or Ireland" there you will find my list of names and known dates. maybe you will be able to help me :-)

good hunting
