McCammond.....

Post by AnneM » Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:49 pm

Hi all.

Wondering if anyone can help me with this. For a good while it has been family 'legend' that my gran Maria McCammond had a close relative whoh was Lord Mayor of Belfast. Now thanks to a couple of rellies I have been informed that a Sir William McCammond was Lord Mayor in 1894 and 1895.

The information I have been given gives his date of birth as 8th Sep 1831 near Carnmoney, Belfast. He married twice, once to a Margaret Morrow Carson in 1853. They had 4 children. Secondly to an Annie Roseborough or Kelso in 1896/7. He died 2 Mar 1898 at his home in Fortwilliam Park, Belfast. I know that he was a presbyterian and had an older brother called James. I think that this information came from his obituary. What I don't know is who his parents were.

What I would like to do is find what if any connection exists. My late aunt said that my gran referred to this chap as her uncle but uncle he was not. She had an uncle William McCammond but he died aged 24 in Old Kilpatrick in 1866. Her grandfather was called James but, according to the 1861 Census in Old Kilpatrick he was born in 1816 in Inch, Wigtownshire. I suppose that does not preclude his being the brother of someone born in 1831 in Belfast but makes it a bit less likely.

My James' parents William McCammond, shoemaker and Elizabeth Paterson were married in 1806 in Inch, Wigtownshire.

As I am hopeless on Irish stuff I would be grateful if someone could suggest how I find out who Sir William' parents were, with a view to finding out if there is any connection.

Ta so much

Hi Anne

Was browsing, came upon your post and wondered if you had got any nearer to finding a link to the Lord Mayor of Belfast?

Sorry I can't help.

Fraid not Catriona.

I am useless with Irish records. I guess that his 2nd Marriage Certificate would probably give his father's name though I don't know what info is on Irish (as it would have been then) certificates. In fact my ignorance is total. I tried once before to access some information on another side of my family who were in Northern Ireland through the Ulster Heritage Society but had no luck and getting them to research further would have cost rather a lot. Suspect that I may have to wait till I have enough dosh to do that or maybe will get to Belfast where one of my friends lives.

I don't suppose WMcC would be a terribly appealing character to everyone as he was most certainly a Unionist and a presbyterian but he seems to have been a popular Lord Mayor and Jim M and I would quite like to know what relation he was (if any) to our forebears.
