Like many of you I have more than one line going back to Ireland.
The most recent is my great grandmother, Cathleen McSherry born1866 in Manor Hamilton.
Samuel McCracken and his wife Mary Hynes/Hinds came from Dromore, Co Down in about 1805, he was a cotton weaver but sadly died in Govan Poorhouse a pauper.
My gggrandparents Hugh Robertson and Mary McKane were both born around 1840 in Ireland, but my ggrandfather (their son) William John Robertson was born in Scotland in about 1880.
Any help with any of these, or pointing me in the right direcion would be much appreciated.

Hi Gail
I just looked on the 1881 Census for your Robertson family and think this may be them....but note that Hugh's wife is going by Margaret here....unless I have the wrong family entirely. Any idea if William John had brothers and sisters???

Hi again Gail
These are all births from the IGI to Hugh Robertson and Margaret McCain or McKean
1. ANN ROBERTSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 DEC 1873 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
2. RACHEL ROBERTSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 05 JUL 1870 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. MARY JANE ROBERTSON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 25 JUN 1865 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
So it appears the family I found in 1881 was this couple. The IGI stops short of little Hugh and William John's birth years and so far I've not found a marriage for Hugh and Margaret. They may of course married in Ireland. A look at any one of the 3 births above on SP should give a date and maybe place of marriage for the parents.
I've spent some time tracing one of my own branches through Robinson/Robertson intrigue. My lot were in Maryhill and New Kilpatrick and came to Pennsylvania sometime after 1874 and before 1881. I still don't know just where they originated in Ireland. One certificate I have states "Bellaistan" or something that resembles it. I've strongly believed it could be a misspelling of Ballyeaston. But that could be just wishful thinking too
. At any rate....I'm pretty sure my lot were from Antrim county. I don't, however, see any links to your Hugh and Margaret at the moment.
Hope this helps in some small way.
Best wishes
Jean
