Good news? .....

Post by MaryE » Sun Jan 22, 2006 10:57 pm

A 'News' snippet in the current Your Family Tree magazine ...

The National Archives of Ireland has announced a unique new partnership with Library and Archives Canada to digitise both the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses over the next three years ...... The first records - covering Dublin from 1911 - will be available online in December 2006, with full page images available as well as a searchable index. Notably, as with census archives in Canada, the service will be completely free.

I wish they could help me

My gt grandfather came from an Irish background cant find his birth on SP or freebmd so must have been in Ireland :?. He lived and died in Glasgow.
I havnt really delved into this side as its been near on impossible on most Irish sites unless you know where they came from. Can someone tell me once and for all why tracing Irish ancestry is so difficult ?

The trouble with Irish records is that so many of them were lost.

During the civil war in 1922 there was street battle in Dublin and one of the sides held up in the four courts where a majority of records were kept and as a result of the engagement about 2/3 of ther ecords were burnt. Secondly, I have heard that during world war I as war effort older census returns were recycled. That doesn't mean thare aren't records of any kind but just a little harder to research. I am barely on the brink of Irish research. We are spoiled by the abundance and availabilty Scotland's records and now especially with scotlandspeople.
You will have to do a swat of how to research Irish records, something I have been slow to do.

Hi rdem

I did have an email from someone the other day who told me if i could get to Dublin i would have more luck. One day that might happen  but as i only have a rough guestimate of when and where my gt grandfather was born but do have his parents names thanks to him moving to Glasgow and getting married there and as you say being spoilt by SP- i dont know what my chances would be of success. Saying that no one knew my Scottish gt grandmothers real name when i started and look where thats got me !

Thanks for your explanation

Tracey, very occasionally the censuses will give you a county in Ireland to search through. Other sources include poorhouse records (if your ancestors had one) and sometimes births of children where date and place of marriage took place had to be included in the registry (if it was in Ireland this can be really helpful). The trick is to find one that will give you that information. If not your gr gr grandfather or his parents, perhaps their siblings might hold clues.

Good luck,

Nina

Hi Nina

I have found English census that could possibly be him with parents and as you know the English ones dont give much away when it comes to other parts of the British Isles birth places mostly just says Scotland or Ireland. The birth places of the siblings are a bit mad ie Scotland Ireland Huddersfield, Suffolk  and some only a year or two apart so i dont know how trustworthy that is and in 1871 the one i am looking for is registered twice with two different ages ?. I have looked for the siblings that said BP Glasgow but cant find them and i would rather find a Scottish BC than an English one ! My grandmother was only a few weeks old when he died in 1906 so never knew him. Her sister died in 1921 and my gt grandmother in the 1940,s so no one knows anything of him. I found a Scottish 1901 census that "could" be my gt grandmother but he isnt with her. The only one i found that could be him he is in prison and says BP England.
Looking for Casey's in Glasgow who were shoemakers is not exactly a joyful experience but one day i will get a start on this lot.8-[

Thanks for the words of encouragment !

Hi Tracey and All

I also have trouble finding my Irish Ancestors, and the Scottish Ancestors who travelled back and forth between Scotland & Ireland.
I did find the marriage certificate for one of them though, at the LDS center. :)

If any of you are REALLY STUCK like me with these Irish records.
Contact David WWW, who recommended to me a Professional Researcher..
The fee is very reasonable and is much, much less than I have spent on SP.
It is just enough to get you going again
