Extract from marriage register .....

Post by CathieL » Tue Feb 07, 2006 1:59 am

Hello everyone
I was able to get an extract from the marriage register of the Church of The Assumption in Booterstown Dublin. It gives me the names of my great grandparents, the marriage date, 1857, the names of the witnesses and the fact that they were living at Goatstown. If I bought the actual marriage certificate would it give me any more information, like the parents names or the ages of the bride and groom. Any ideas anyone?
I am just presuming I would be able to order the cert. from somewhere

Hi Cathy,

I have an Irish marriage certificate from Portadown in the county of Armagh. The information on it is:

Name of bride and groom
Age - Full (note no ages)
Occupation
Where born
Name of father of the bride and father of the groom and their occupation (no mothers names).
Witness's names

Hi Ina
Thank you for your answer. Finding out where they were born would be a big help and from what I know of them I think they were very young when they were married. They had one son in Ireland about two years after the marriage but I can't find his birth. I found the family on the 1871 census for Renfrew and there is a gap of seven years between the first son and the next child. They then had five more children by the time the 1881 census came around. I have the whole family very well documented from 1871 on but now I have to work in the Irish bit and hopefully the marriage cert. will give me that little bit extra to work with. I have the names of the parents from death certs. but knowing where John and Mary were born might help me find out more about the parents.

Hi Ina
The place I was going to get the marriage cert. from won't have it! :(

Registers of all Marriages registered in the whole of Ireland from 1st April 1845 , to 31st December 1863 , except those celebrated by the Roman Catholic clergy.

So I guess I'm out of luck again as the marriage was Roman Catholic ,1857.
I will have to think of something else but I thank you for your input.

Hi Cathie,

Try writing to the Church of Assumption (a google search may give you the address) where the marriage took place.

The marriage record I have came from the Roman Catholic Chapel of Drumcree. A cousin in Scotland sent away for it, and was nice enough to send me a copy.

Good luck.

Hello Ina
I contacted them last November and they sent me the extract. The sacristan's name is Paul Lyng and I think I will contact him again and ask if they could find the ages for me. I think John was 17 and Mary was 15 or 16 and I need that to help me find their births. He did add to the extract that they were both living in Goatstown at the time so I will try to find more information on that.
