I've found out on the net that Broughshane has a population of around 2000 at this present time.
Is there any way I can find out the population around 1890?
The reason being, I have 2 brothers who were born born there. Joseph and John McAllister. Joseph came to Scotland around 1890. He is my g grandfather. I have him in the 1891 census onwards.
I then have births of 2 children showing the father as John McAllister, his marriage place shown as Broughshane Co. Antrim. John and his wife are living in the same village in Scotland as Joseph and his family(yards apart)
I found these children by accident, when looking for Joseph's family. Both Joseph and John had sons born on the same day and they both named them James.
My Joseph and John's father's name was James.
However I have no proof that the John McAllister found here is the brother of Joseph.
I wondered what the odds would be to them being brothers. If there is a good chance that they are related then I can dig around more.
Basically, is it a worthwhile excercise?

The IGI comes up with at least a dozen Josephs and quite a few James' births in Antrim. These always list parents (or at least the mother's name, if illegitimate.)
Okay, first things first: regardless of the size of the townland then or now, you have to known the registration town for Broughshane before you can find it in Irish records. The townland atlas of
http://www.seanruad.com/
shows that all three of them (Broughshane, Upper and Lower) are in the Ballymena PLU district (usually the registration town) and in the Racavan civil parish.
With Irish townlands rarely exceeding 500 acres in size, populations are usually quite small (especially in farming areas) and the chances for these two being related increases dramatically.
Depending upon what you already know about them (e.g. - likely year of parent's marriage or child birth), you could obtain the LDS films for the Ballymena marriage indexes of that year - and perhaps the index of births.
If you find these individuals on those index films - one for each quarter-year - they will give you the volume/page in the registration books of all of Ireland. It is then just a matter of ordering the correct LDS film containing the Ballymena birth registration record(s), which should list the names and occupations of the child's parents.
Time-consuming, yes - but inexpensive. (And fascinating...)
If James and Joseph were born circa 1870 (so as to arrive in Scotland by 1890) obtaining a copy of their birth records from the LDS films is a definite possibility. There's always the chance, though, that their parents never bothered to comply with the civil registration law - a common occurence in Ireland, particularly among the poor of any religion.

From Joseph's death certificate I got his parents names. James McAllister and Nancy McAllister m.s. Magee. Joseph was 87 when he died in 1946 making his year of birth 1859. Joseph's wife's name is Sarah McVicker(s) McArthur McAllister (What a mouthfull. My poor Auntie was lumbered with all these names too!!)
I found his brother John's birth on the IGI site by putting in the parents names. John was the only child shown. Born in Broughshane Antrim 23 Oct 1865 No matter, I know that Joseph is my g grandfather.
From Joseph's son James's birth cert(my grandfather) I got Joseph's wedding details. Married Sarah McArthur Nov 1880 in Ballymena.
Now I have a John who has a child called James born the same day as Joseph's son james. This John's wife is shown as Eliza Jane McAllister m.s. Bell married May 1886 Broughshane Antrim.
To me the only way to prove they are brothers would be if I could find John's death cert and it showed the same parents. This is impossible as I believe my John emigrated to America in the 1920's.
Is there any info here to get the proof from the LDS?

Hi Jean,I had a look at the Ellis Island site for your John McAllister born 1865.There were 4 but only 1 didn't show ethnicty but he had been in the States previously and was traveling with a May McAllister. You should have a look yourself if you have any other info. that might change the outcome.

Hi Jean
Any idea if the immigrant to US John McAllister was living in 1930?..or where? Had a peek at the 1930 UScensus for John McAllister born Ireland and these are the results. Any likely suspects?
