I have found details in the campsie Marriage records which state that my ancestor " Peter O'neil was born in Ainnes,C.Down,Ireland. But I cannot find out were it is. I have looked at the map.C.Down. Could the spelling be wrong. His father was Bernard O'Neil and mother was Rose Fegan.
Can anyone help me trace this family line. Regards Bill
Can anyone tell me were Ainnes,County Down is, .....

Hi Bill
It sure looks like that spelling is highly suspect. Problem is there is no other possiblity that looks or sounds like it either
I wonder if you've searched this site before:

You can experiment with all sorts of possible combinations to try and determine a place name. Nothing comes close to Ainnes in County Down though.....I think the closest is Slanes and I have no idea how these would have been pronounced
Let's hope an Irish expert happens along soon.....
Best wishes
Jean

Newtownards has Inishargy
Downpatrick has Inch (which in broad Ulster would sound VERY close to Ainnes)
