Oliver Brown .....

Post by malshie » Mon Apr 10, 2006 4:19 pm

Could anyone please help me find the parents of Oliver Brown born 1854 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. I think the family may of been Roman Catholic.

Kind Regards
Malshie.

Hi Malshie and welcome!

Oliver Brown in a nice uncommon name to look for! But if the birth year is truly 1854 then not so nice especially if as you suspect the parents were Catholic. I'm assuming that Oliver left Scotland before 1861?...as I'm not finding any census listing for that name. In 1851 census there is one Oliver Brown aged 16 in Port Glasgow. The two closest births are a John Oliver Brown in 1853 Port Glasgow....and a James Oliver Brown in 1858 Clyde.....and the parents are not the same. Interestingly the 16 year old Oliver was listed as born Canada. Do you have any further info that might point the finger in one of these directions?? Did Oliver have any siblings??

I'm afraid that's all I can offer..

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Thank you for taken the time to read and reply to my question about Oliver Brown. As far as I know he married a Jane Redmond also from Lanarkshire around 1876/77. They had their first daughter Margaret born around 1877 in Glasgow and then moved to Co. Durham around 1879.

So, I am presuming, he was in Scotland from his birth 1854+-2 years until 1879. I think I will go with your find, John Oliver Brown born Glasgow 1853 would you be able to give me any information on him please?
Kind Regards
Malshie

Hi Malshie

Based on the Durham clue then I have to assume this is your family in 1881?

Dwelling: 15 Lyon Lane
Census Place: Hedworth Monkton & Jarrow, Durham, England
Source: FHL Film 1342211 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5028 Folio 21 Page 5
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Oliver BROWN M 27 M Glasgow, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Rivetter (Artz)
Margaret BROWN M 22 F Glasgow, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Jane BROWN 4 F Glasgow, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Frances BROWN 1 F Hebburn, Durham, England
Rel: Daur

and seeing from this that his wife was Margaret and not his daughter you will be able to find a marriage in 1876 on the pay per view Scotland's People website for them. Note: Margaret's surname is not REDMOND so just leave the female surname blank and there will only be one Margaret marrying an Oliver Brown.

Because the birth in Port Glasgow of John Oliver BROWN is in 1853 (still on the OPR records) then there is no image available online. You can order an extract from Scotland's People but it will show little or no further information than the index. If you search the Scotland's People OPR index you will be able to confirm if his parents names on his birth are the same as his parents names on his marriage. This is the only way to be certain you have the same fellow!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Malshie,
To add to Jean's good bit of work, this BC might be worth looking at?
(but only if the parents of John Oliver Brown born 1853 match those of Oliver's 1876 marriage)

WM. JAMES BROWN - Birth: 20 JAN 1855 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland
Father: JOHN BROWN
Mother: ROSINA MCGLOM

Thank you to Jean and Jack for your helpful suggestions.

Yes, Margaret is probably his wife and not daughter. Although, my fathers middle name was Redmond, (and we always wondered who he was named after) so I probably jumped the gun so to speak and switched around the names to make it fit, silly i know, but the age of Jane and where she came from all seemed to match and sometimes census information has been known to be wrong.

Oh well, back to drawing board, I will try and order Oliver`s Marriage Certficate and see what it turns up.

Thank you again for taken the time to reply.
Kind Regards
Malshie.

Just a quick note to Just Jean and Jack with regard to my query on Oliver Brown. I have confirmed that you were both right. I could not read the name of Oliver`s mother on the Marriage Certificate but thanks to Jack I now know it was Rosina McGlom.

Another bit of the puzzle solved, so a big thankyou to you both.
Good luck with your own research
Kindest Regards

(Nice one, Jack !!)

On the marriage register entry I'd go for McGLONE instead of McGLOM.

The 1876 birth of Jane BROWN links into the situation, except she wasn't born in "Glasgow" but a town with "Glasgow" in its name a few miles to the West of Glasgow.

David

PS Oliver's father has an interesting country of birth!, - Holland.

Hi Malshie,
That was good news! Thanks for updating us all.
Any plaudits are due to Jean who pointed us in the right direction; ie a town to the west of Glasgow.
David, i did wonder about the surname McGlom,
but in the last couple of years i've seen so many different names that nothing now really surprises me!
McGlone though does seem more "normal" to our modern day ears.
Cheers - Jack
