Hullo Hugh

Was wondering if you had made any progress in your research for your namesake?

Best wishes

Hugh
Sorry to have given you heart failure!

Sssh! Don't tell anyone but in answering your post I hoped to bring it to the notice of one of the Irish experts who maybe didn't see it first time around.

All the best
Catriona

I noticed on IGI that a Thomas Stevely had a daughter, Sarah, at Galgorm on 28/10/1864. Galgorm is on the edge of Ballymena so may connect into your line somewhere.

Not a common name under Stevely or Stavely. Your best bet would be the Tithe rolls but unless someone has posted them on a personal site for Ballymena they're only available in Ireland.

Don't think the Agricultural Census of 1803 covered Ballymena.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Scotmum and to you to Andy.
Thanks for your info i have a up-date. on the 1851 cencus for old Monkland.
David Stevely age 32 born Ireland.
Elizabeth Stevely age 40 born Ireland,
Hugh Stevely age 6 born Ireland.
William Stevely age 2 born Old Monklands,
We know the family came form the Ballymena area,we think Davids parents where Hugh Stevely and Sarah Campbell.
We think Thomas would of been a Nephew of James but finding this out is hard to prove.
Hugh.

From another Thread:

Based upon the only William St*v*l* born in 1886 all the following information is correct.

The parents Hugh and Sarah Allan were married about 1870 so that record should be available in Ireland, also Hugh's father, David? (from death cert), should be listed in Griffith's.

Hugh's family came to Scotland between 1875 and 1878 (Robert James died in Eastwood in 1874 so they perhaps moved about a bit).

There is a submitted entry for Hugh and Sarah's marriage in Ballymena:

HUGH STAVELY
Male Family

Event(s):
Birth:
Christening:
Death:
Burial:

Parents:
Father: DAVID STAVELY Family

Marriages:
Spouse: SARAH ALLEN Family
Marriage:
07 JUN 1869 Reg Off, Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland

Plus two extracted births:

1. David Stavely - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 01 MAY 1870 , Antrim, Ireland
2. Robert James Stavely - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 15 AUG 1872 , Antrim, Ireland

You'll have Hugh and Sarah in Eastwood in 1881:

But did you check next door?

So, although born in Airdrie, William and Agnes (Cathcart) were in Ireland at the same time as Hugh and Sarah, arrived in Scotland about the same time, had children (including David) in P'Shaws and were living next to to each other in 1881 in Eastwood.

If this isn't a candidate for Birds of a Feather nothing is. However there are conflicting Mother's reported on Hugh and William's death certs, Elizabeth McCulloch (Hugh's) or Brown (William's).

The fact that Elizabeth (Brown) STAVELY died in Eastwood in 1876 seems to clear up the name. The death was reported by son, Hugh.

Hugh and William reportedly had another brother, David, but I've not been able to find him.
