Loughguile .....

Post by Ann Wells » Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:43 am

Hi folks

I am fairly new to this site and wondered if anyone has relatives from the Loughguile area? I think it may be spelt Loughgeil sometimes.

My Great Grandmother Martha Sloan, moved to Scotland with hre parents and brothers and sisters (some married) in the 1840's. Her family all settled in West Lothian in the mining community. SHe landed up married to a fisherman from Dunbar.

Interested to hear from anyone from that area (in Antrim) or of that name.

Annie

Hi Annie,

I have a Great Grandfather, Alexander Sloan who came over to Glasgow from Ireland sometime between 1866 when I think he was born and 1888, when he married a Mary Campbell in Cambuslang.

He, and the only birth year and parents that matched, John Sloan and Mary Strain, seem to have come from County Down, but that is still very much in my "Potential Rellies" file as I've never been able to confirm that. Typically, censuses only ever say that he was born in Ireland

My paternal Grandmother's name was Mary Strain Sloan b:1889 in Cambuslang, which would seem to confirm the connection.
