JOHNSTON .....

Post by Paul J » Sat Jun 04, 2005 2:21 pm

I am looking for information about my gg grandfather and gg grandmother. My gg grandfather, Samuel Johnston, was born in Belfast in 1811. He emigrated to Toledo, Ohio after his wife passed away. My gg grandmother, Isabella Burns Johnston was born in Belfast in 1816. She died on 27 July 1878 in Belfast. My gg grandfather was a landscape gardner and contracted with land owners to train staff for their estates. I have two dates for their marriage, 5 May 1838 and 5 May 1842 at the Townsend Street Presbyterian Church in Belfast. They had one son, Robert, born 6 April 1836 in Belfast and six more after they were married...John b 1842, Maria b 1845, Isabella b 1849 d 1942, Annie b 1850 d 1944 m John Pettigrew b 1850 d 1931, Martha b 1853 d 1926 m Albert Osborne, Samuel b 1855 d 25 Jan 1950 in Belfast. My gg grandparents had a home at 31 Virginia Street in Belfast. I am told they used to travel around and live where my gg grandfather was working, but my gg grandmother got tired of moving around and they bought a house in Belfast. My g grandfather Robert married Elizabeth Harriet Summerskill in 1865 in England and they emigrated to the US about that time. I have much information and photos going forward, but no information on Samuel and Isabella's parents. I would be pleased to share any information I have and would appreciate any help. I have photos I would like get an opinion on as to the time period taken.
Thankyou,
Paul Johnston[/b]

Hi Paul

Wish I had Johnstons in my family but so far....not a one  Hope you find someone who can share some info with you!

A couple websites that I have found helpful to learn about old photographs are:

http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/index.htm
http://www.cartes.freeuk.com/time/time.htm

Also images can be uploaded to our gallery if you have a question that you think someone on this board might be able to assist you with.

Hello Jean,
Thankyou for your response. I found those sites very interesting and I think they gave me a good idea of the time period the pictures I have were taken.

CORRECTION:
My gg graandparents, Samuel Johnston and Isabella Burns Johnston, address is listed incorrectly. It should be 31 Virginia Street, Belfast.
Thanks,
Paul Johnston

Additional information I have just learned.

Samuel and Isabella Burns were married 5 May 1838 at the Townsend Street Presbyterian Church as listed in my first entry in this thread, not 1842. At the time of there marriage, Samuel was living in Carrickfergus and Isabella was a resident of Ballynahinch. The marriage certificate lists the witnesses as Arthur Johnston and John Johnston, both of Belfast. They were probably related to Samuel, but the relationship is unknown. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated very much.
