Germany Research

Post by Carolann » Sat Aug 22, 2009 11:48 am

Hi

Looking for some information if anyone can help out there regarding where to start about tracing in Germany.

My GGG grandfather according to 1851 census was born in Berlin Germany - All I know of him was he was married on 26 Feb 1836 in Greenock He was born around 1814/15 and his name is Charles Fredrick and worked as a Sugar Baker in Greenock in one of the many sugar houses.-( the Fredrick spelling has now changed to Frederick )

Any ideas where I can start on very little information. This has come about watching the World Athletic in Berllin -

Any clues where to start would be of help

Hi Carolanne
I have never researched in Germany (no connections :D )
But maybe this could be a start for you

I put German geneology in my search and this was one of a few that came up.

Hi Carolann:

You can search on Ancestry.com and choose a preference for German collections, but viewing the records is available through membership only.

The IGI at http://www.familysearch.org

lists Charles Fredericks
Married Jean France
26 Feb 1836 West or Old Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland

Charles and Jane are also listed in the 1861 census as living in Renfrewshire.

http://www.academic-genealogy.com/regio ... tm#Germany This site has many sources for German research.

Hi Stewi and Paddycar

Thank you for this information.

Paddycar I have been to our local library and was able to view the 1841 census and saw the marriage on IGI - but the census does not give a lot of information unfortunately, but thank you so much for your help - much appreciated.

I probably will come across a few brick walls no doubt.

Cheers
