Ella Mary Maclennan

Post by isk » Sat Jul 09, 2022 6:23 pm

Good evening. I feel very guilty to be asking for help when I have been away from TalkingScot for over a year. I am looking for help regarding Isabella Mary Maclennan born in Edinburgh on 13 March 1881 to George Maclennan and Isabella Smail. I have found a record on the Antwerp Police Immigration Index 1840-1930 for an Ella Mary Maclennan and wondered if I might be on the right track as there is also the name Berhends attached to the this which ties up with other members of the family. Thank you in advance for any information and help. isk

FMP also has a death of a Ella Behrends born 13 March 1881 and died Jan-March 1971 Surrey, South Western.
The original death index also has her as Isabel Mary Behrends.

Does that help in any way?

There's also a probate records for her
BEHRENDS Isabella Mary otherwise Bella Mary or Isabel Mary or MACLENNAN
of 22 Fairway Merrow Guildford died 26th February 1971 Administration
Winchester 15th June £1187
A private road that even the google car isn't allowed down!!

There's also a Mrs Ella Behrends indexed as going to NewZealand in 1925 , however when I checked the original document, I'm not sure if the "Mrs Ella" is actually with the NZ High Commissioner Cecil Ives Beckett, above her name rather than Lt Col Francis David Behrends, below her name. in fact I'm certain it's Ella Beckett as she's in 2nd class and FD Behrends is in 1st.
However the Ella Mary Behrends going to the Canary Islands in 1923 looks much more like your lady, address - Dinwoodie, Cargil Ter Edinburgh She's noted as a citizen of Holland.

Now I must retreat from this rabbit hole and go to my bunk and leave you with these snippets to work on yourself :)

The Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories of 1921-1922, 1922-1923, 1923-1924 and 1924-1925 all list the occupant of Dinwoodie, 27 Cargil Terrace, Edinburgh as Mrs Goudie.

Those no longer qualified as electors at 27 Cargill Terrace are:
In 1921 and 1922: Mr Andrew D Goudie
In 1923: Rudolph Gaudie
In 1925: Mrs Isabel M Gaudie

Those at 27 Cargil Terrace qualified to vote:
In 1920-1921 (Leith): Andrew D Gaudie and Isabel M Gaudie
In 1921-1922 (Edinburgh): Mrs Isabel M Gaudie
In 1924-1925 (Edinburgh): Mrs Isabel M Gaudie
In 1925 (Edinburgh): Charles E Alison and Mrs E Alison
In 1925-1926 (Edinburgh): Charles E Alison and Mrs E Alison

In 1896 William Anderson Gaudie married Isabel Martin Dow in Edinburgh
In 1897 Andrew Dow Gaudie was born in Leith North
In 1901 Rudolph William Gaudie was born in Leith North
In 1905 William Anderson Gaudie died in North Leith (aged 34)
In 1925 Andrew Dow Gaudie married Margaret Thomson Clark in Edinburgh
In 1953 Isobel Martin Gaudie or Dow died in Morningside (aged 80)

I have no idea if the Gaudies were related to your lady or not; or if she was just lodging with them.

Food for thought,

AndrewP

Thank you Wilma and Andrew. I would just love to know why she went to Antwerp just before or during WW 1. I will do a bit more digging into the possible Goudie connection. This is a connection on my husband’s mum’s family. My mother in law was a fount of knowledge and her middle name was McLennan. Once again my sincere thanks. isk

That struck me as curious too.
Her father seems to have died between the 1891 and 1901 census [FMP has the family misstranscribed as Machennan in 1891], but there seems to be a death for her mother in Rotterdam in 'Gro Consular Death Indices (1849 To 1965)', 1926-1930 year range.

I understand from my daughter that the Dutch records are rather good, she thinks she found them through family search, but maybe Ancestry would have more information for you.

Maybe she went to Antwerp as a nurse or to help out in a similar capacity. http://www.gwpda.org/memoir/warnurse/wn1.html

I can’t see a record among the WW1 British nurses at the National Archives but they wouldn’t have been the only show in town. https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hel ... 1914-1918/

Many evacuees from Antwerp would have ended up in Holland.

Did she have an occupation in 1911?

I did a search for the Antwerp Police record you mentioned in your first post. The annotation you mention there, is Behrend Karl G ?
Looking at the rest of the page, a spouse's name is mentioned at that point presumably as the reason for immigration?

I checked for that name on FMP and found his death and found his death in the 1st quarter of 1939.
Karl G H Behrends in Worthing Surrey born 1880, unfortunately I can't find Bella still in England on the 1939 register [under any combination of her names] nor is there probate for Karl.

Do let us know how you get on tracing them.

Dear All, many thanks for your interest. Here is what I have including the information from all of you.
Isabella Mary Maclennan born in Edinburgh on 13 March 1881, married Karl Gerhard Hermann Behrends sometime between 1911 and 1915. She died, according to Probate Records, on 26 February 1971 in Guildford. Karl Gerhard Hermann Behrends, was born in Hannover, Prussia on 10 February 1882 and died at Worthing in the 1st Quarter of 1939 aged 57 years. His parents appear to be Ernst Karl Wilhelm Behrends and Maria Friederike Dora Elisabeth Freise. Maybe a blessing he died early in 1939.
Again my thanks for all your help isk =D> =D> =D> =D>
