Alexander McIntosh MBE?

Post by Anniespangles » Fri Mar 24, 2017 9:25 pm

Hello everyone .
I am looking into the life of an Alexander McIntosh who was born around 1874 and died in Dumbarton on the 20th of January 1952 aged 78 . I found a really great obituary written in our local newspaper from 1952 where it states he was an MBE and JP in Dumbarton. I would really love to know when and why he was given this gong , I can't search the local press unless I have a date . I phoned the national archive in Kew this afternoon and they pointed me in the direction of the London Gazzett . Alas I found nothing . Just wondering if anyone has any tips or ideas where to look now , it's feeling a bit like a needle in a haystack . :)

Hello Annie,

Death Notice Alexander McIntosh.
The Glasgow Herald, Jan 21, 1952.

The Scotsman (Edinburgh), 31 Mar 1920: p12
ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE.
To be Members of the Civil Division of the said Most Excellent Order.
ALEXANDER M'INTOSH, Esq.
Honorary Secretary, Dumbarton War Pensions Committee.

According to the newspaper this was from a supplement to the London Gazette issued the previous day, and that there were 59 gazette pages of MBE recipients alone.

Edinburgh Gazette, 1 April, 1920. Half way down first column.

The Scotsman (Edinburgh), 30 Apr 1929: p7.

Hope that's him,
Alan
