Sandyson / Simpson

Post by tazzy » Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:21 pm

I'm a bit confused and wander if anyone can help me. My GGGrandfather, William Simson, was born in 1818 in Alves to William Simson and Jane Sandyson. I can't find a marriage for them but they had 3 children: James, born 1816, William born 1818 and Elizabeth born 1820. All born in Alves.
I have found a marriage for James Simpson to Margaret Skene and the lived at Auchtertyre
I have found a death for Jane Sandison on 5th Dec in 1869 at Crofts of Auchtertyre which would fit in with the information I have and the only birth I can find is for a Jane Sandison born in Birnie in 1797. Her parents are William Sandison and Margaret Coban. Her death certiifcate shows her parents names as William Sandison and Elizabeth Coban, death registered by her son James,
I can't findd a death for William Simson either.
There are Sandison, Cobans and Simpsons but they don;t seem to fit in
Hoping someone can help me solve the mystery

Hello Tazzy,

Just to give you an idea of the state of the pre 1855 OPR’s in the parish of Alves, and in case you’re chasing something there that doesn’t exist.

The following is from “Detailed List of the Old Parochial Registers of Scotland”, published by GROS in 1872.

Alves.—
B. Leaves of Record down to 1653 very much wasted, and entries partially or wholly illegible. Exc. one entry for 1702, blank Oct. 1700-Jan. 1705.
M. No entries Jan. 1648-Jan. 1649, Dec. 1700-Mar. 1708, Nov. 1709-July 1716. Fourteen leaves (1733-52) so wasted as to render imperfect the entries at the bottom of each page. Exc. 1801-2, blank June 1778-Jan. 1810, and Nov. 1813-Feb. 1819.
D. (Deaths.) Blank April 1674-June 1678, and May 1693-May 1696. Four entries (1713-15) on last page of Register.

From the above, births don’t appear to be too bad with only a couple of problems noted but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s otherwise a complete record in the parish. For marriages, if I’m reading it correctly, between 1778 and 1819 the only years there are records are 1801-2 and 1810-13 and more than likely that’s why you can’t find the marriage. For deaths there are no records after 1715.

Hope that helps,
Alan
