Hi,
I'm trying to find my 3 x great grandfather David Gillespie's address from 1856 in Cross Keys, Doune, Stirlingshire (when his wife died) till 1861 in Cowane St, Stirling. I think he was a miller, or agricultural labourer/farmer by trade. I'd like to know when he moved, if possible.
Are there any directories for Stirlingshire circa 1856-61 available ?

That's quite a tight time scale, the valuation rolls on SP only cover one of those years, and he had died by the census in 1861 hadn't he?

Hi Wilma,
Yes, David died a month before the 1861 census unfortunately. I think I may have found him in the poor registers for Callander in 1860, its dated 22 Nov and mentions him as a widower. Hid address at 70 Cowane St. may have been a lodging house or possibly a boarding house I'm not sure. I'd like to find records for his poor relief application to see if it has any other details about him which may confirm a few things.

Cowane's hospital may be a clue for you. I think it was the parish relief/poorhouse type of place. I did visit it some years ago before I started family the hunting in earnest.
They had all sort of records available.
I think though it was shut though for some building reason.
Do a Google and maybe they can help.
