Gravestone Symbols

Post by Lizzie S » Thu Nov 15, 2018 5:06 pm

Having spent many hours in graveyards and cemeteries looking for ancestoral graves I have become fascinated by the symbols and carvings on the older ones and would like to know more about them. There is quite a lot on line but I would prefer a book. I found a number of publications but they were nearly all referring to American stones and I guess they may not have used the same symbols. Does anyone know of a good guide to gravestone symbols in Scotland?
Hoping someone will have an answer as I am sure many of you will have done the same in searching for information on ancestors.

Don't know if this is what you are looking for
Gravestones, Tombs and Memorials: Symbols, Styles & Epitaphs (Paperback)
Trevor Yorke
The ABCs of Gravestone Symbols: Every Gravestone Tells a Story (Paperback)
Teresa Straley Lambert

- I saw them advertised in Foyles bookstore https://www.foyles.co.uk/
and search for Gravestone Symbols - it lists the two, and from the ISBN you may be able to get your local library to get copies in for you.

Thanks for your response. I have the first one you mentioned but it doesn't really give much information on gravestone symbols. I will have a look for the other one though.

I've just looked it up on Amazon and it seems to be poems about symbols but mainly American so may not be that helpful.
Thanks for trying though. Its frustrating when something sparks an interest and then I can't seem to follow it up :(

How about "Emblems in Scotland: Motifs and Meanings", By Michael Bath, published 2018. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=XK ... 22&f=false

Are these online books of any use, or is it all too ancient (and difficult to read).

Sculptured Stones of Scotland, Volume 1, published 1856. (seems to have been scanned backwards?)
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=rj ... &q&f=false

Sculptured Stones of Scotland, Volume 2, published 1867.

Newly arrived Scots, American, but 100% Scottish tradition.

The True Image: Gravestone Art and the Culture of Scotch Irish Settlers in the Pennsylvania and Carolina Backcountry, by Daniel W. Patterson, 2012. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=s7 ... &q&f=false
