There's also this entry in the CA death listings:
James L McLaren
Birth Date: 26 Jan 1899
Birthplace: Scotland
Death Date: 11 Sep 1962
Death Place: Los Angeles
Mother's Maiden Name: Renton
Have you found the family in 1901 census returns? Won't necessarily help but it is possible there is someone living in the household or next door who will turn up later in the US, as a way of confirming that you've found the right James.
I'm not seeing any obvious Pamela McLaren in the records at Ancestry.
I'd second the suggestion that someone else made to get his birth record, so you have the birth date, as that may help focus your search choices.

Hi SarahSarahND wrote:Here are three possible entries in the Social Security Death Index. If you look up his birth cert on Scotland's People (link at the top of this page) you can tell if one of these is the correct man by the birth date. Have you tried yet to look up birth certificates for this family?m morgan wrote:I think James died in the late 1960s or early 70s.

I’m a bit confused about this 1906, 1936 and 1956 business. Does that preclude mention of any death, from any source, anywhere in the World after 1956 or does it only apply to those deceased people born after 1906.
If the person is known to have died, either before or after 1956, is it ok to release the birth information? Would it be possible, in those circumstances, to breach the birth, marriage or death year rule?
It’s just that whenever I read something about “the living” there’s a reference to the 1956 cut-off date. Is there in fact a 1956 rule and under what circumstances could it be breached?

Jean, the amazement is mutual
I take it you had a peek at the birth records on SP?
Alan, someone may come in with a more official view, but my understanding has always been that if you know someone is deceased, it is okay to post the data on them-- birth, marriage date (if the spouse is also deceased, then that name also) and of course death. In this case, since Marguerite said in her first post that Jeannie had died young, I figured it was okay to charge in... It does get tricky with the U.S. censuses that come all the way up to 1930 online. Obviously, many of those people are still living.
Regards,
Sarah
