Hats off to you, Carol!
I saw all those newspaper articles, noticed they were all on the sports page, and was too lazy to go cross-eyed trying to find his name! I wish the newspaper searches on Ancestry would highlight the name on the page as the 19th century British newspapers do.

[cheers]
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The names were highlighted in these articles. I would have thrown in the towel at the start otherwise!

The only problem is that the search results aren't always real accurate. One article has the names Joseph Longtin, Warren Fox with the Longtin, Warren parts highlighted!!! :o

Carol :D
Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

As I did :D
You mean that when you search Ancestry newspapers the names are highlighted on the page, and when I do they aren't? :o Or are you searching them on a different site? I almost never use the newspapers for that reason, and because the results are a bit shaky, as you mention.

Regards,
Sarah

Sarah,

This was on Ancestry. After I did the first search and got the census page, I clicked on Newspapers in the left hand column, then when the list came up I clicked on one which happened to be the Oct. 1938 issue of The Lowell Daily Sun. Once the article downloaded--very slowly on my dial-up--I just scrolled up and down and right and left and the names that I had searched-Warren Longtin-were highlighted. If I remember correctly, one name was in green and one was in yellow even when they were side by side in a sentence.

I don't use the newspapers much either, but the same thing happens when I search a directory--the names are highlighted. I can't remember ever selecting this. It just happens.

Ladies thank you so much for double checking. Sarah I was wrong about Warren's birth, didn't have my glasses on this morning 8) :o He was born on July 4, 1920.

Simply amazing results there Carol! Gosh his niece said he was a jock & a high diver, but I never thought of looking him up in the sports section of the Lowell Sun? I pass through Lowell at least a dozen times a year, so I'll just stop at their BEAUTIFUL Library. But if you can send me what's on your desktop that would be fantastic!!!

Five minutes ago, I working on a chapter about Warren feeling sorry for myself that I didn't have a picture of him  and then I clicked onto TS and found this wonderful surprise....Thank you so much...

Here's a note that I received last night from his niece

Warren was a three state champion high diver and had a full scholarship to Springfield State College and along came World War 11 and that was the end of that. When he was in the war he was in the mud of New Guinea when a Sgt came by and said “Hey”….any of you guys know how to cook? Warren told him “Yes” his family owned a restaurant…..he was sent to a hospital ship where he stayed for the rest of the war as a cook. While on the ship a Japanese plane tried to attack the ship and it was shot down. Warren dove from high up on the ship and rescued that pilot. When he came back from the war he had an apprenticeship as a cook at the Walter’s Grille (Pepe’s restaurant)

Hi Marilyn,

Amazing how these things take off and grow every which way isn't it!?

Thought you might have the draft cards, but I'll send you the other articles shortly. Maybe tomorrow I'll check a few of the other newspapers listed. I was hoping for a business reference from the later years with maybe a later picture, but we'll see. The other papers were from New England, NY and the mid-west so it may not be him that shows up.

Hi Carol,

Thank you for the kind offer, but after the war Warren returned to Lowell, married and worked at his parent's dinner up until a few years before his death. I would be grateful for the picutes of the YMCA, football game and the golf game.

I'll need to get up to Waltham to fetch that WW 11 Draft Card.

Appreciate your time

Marilyn,

The articles are on the way. I sent them to the email address you had given me previously. Hope it's still good. You're getting diving, football and swimming. Didn't have the golf game saved, but I can get it tomorrow. Going to watch baseball now. :D
