Hi Bruce,
Sorry I called you Brian in that post. Don't know what I was thinking!
A short term Ancestry subscription may be what you want unless you're really hooked on this research! There is material on there for the earlier years ie. the census records, but for the period after 1901 things get thin because of the law limiting access. The 1891 census shows Elspeth's mother Lizzie Sime and her brother James Sime living with Hugh and Elspeth. Several of the Finlayson names come up in the newspaper section, but that is a common name so these could be false leads and the newspapers are scattered all over the world too.
Elizabeth was still single when John and Flora married. She is a witness on their marriage cert. which you have seen I'm sure. She would have been 40 at that time. Her still being single should make her easier to find because women disappear into the records when they marry unless you know who they married. I didn't find Elizabeth in my initial search in Scotland so she may have immigrated. There aren't many records available online for Saskatchewan, but it might be worth following those websites in the previous post to look for Flora in Canada. I found those websites by googling for newspapers Saskatchewan so that information didn't come from Ancestry.
Carol

Hi Carol
Many thanks for the image as I said I never new that James had joined the services, according to my mother he never served and he never worked. He stayed with my mothers family until his mother died in 1932 and he left the house and never returned no one knows where he went, I wonder if with the information my mother can remember about his behaviour if he had been damaged during hostilities.
I had previously posted on the Scottish people board on the forum under finlayson looking for both James and his brother hugh.

Bruce,
I was just reading your previous posts on the Finlaysons. Looks like I got in on the tamer end of the search!
James could easily have been suffering from war related problems. No one really knew much about post traumatic stress at that time. Or he could simply have decided to move some where else after his mother died. He may even have left the country.
I never did pick this up--Did John Marshall and Flora move back to Canada after they married? Or did they stay in Scotland?
Carol

Hi carol
I had a bad day at work yesterday what with one thing and another, I have led you up the garden path.
It was Hugh that disapeared,James acctually came to Perth from Lairg in Sutherlandshire to register his mothers death in 1932,
James and Flora by all accounts went back to Canada as my mother remembers gifts comming fron there when she was a young child.
once again sorry for misleading anyone
Yours Aye

Bruce,
I had forgotten that Ancesty also has the Perth newspaper Index Cards which list an event written up and the date and page number. I did a search for Hugh and a card came up:
Finlayson, Hugh
Quarry Cottage, Pitroddie
Death 1-10-1929
PA 1929 Oct 5 P.1
Looks like he died on 1 Oct. 1929. If you could find someone who had access to the newspaper archives, you could probably get his obituary. Haven't had a chance to look at the complete list--there are lots of Finlaysons in Perth!!
Carol
Edit: The PA stands for The Perthshire Advertiser.
