Hi Scoop
Ah, thanks...just checking! :D I have Duffs from Easter Ross. Not sure where you are based, but if you have addresses in Dundee for them and you would like to know if places are still standing etc. I'm in Dundee from time to time and could have a look if needed.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks. I've been meaning to get across there myself just never get around to it. Funny enough, I have found one of the addresses is a Pizza Napoli :D

Further back in my tree I have Duff's from Perthshire but it all seems they are around the Perth/Dundee area.

Thanks for deleting the duplicate post.

Hi Scoop,
Maybe the person who posted the data you saw got Mary confused with Jeannie, who did die in California, as I'm sure you know:

California Death Index, 1940-1997
Name:ALLAN, JEANNIE D
Social Security #:554019551
Sex:FEMALE
Birth Date:7 Sep 1888
Birthplace:OTHER COUNTRY
Death Date:6 Feb 1979
Death Place:SAN DIEGO

There is a Mary F. Duff who lived in Alameda County, California, but she came over in 1911. I found her immigration record and she is not your Mary.

The only Mary Duff I find who died in 1989 in California was born in 1909, which doesn't work. Unless it is an error on the database? If she really lived to be 100, there should be something about it in the newspaper wherever she lived.

In the 1930 census, Thomas Allan is recorded as a manufacturer of paper boxes, so he must be the one your father told about. Maybe William took over the branch in Chicago while Thomas went to San Diego?

All the best,
Sarah

Thanks for all your help.

I believe you are right about Jeanie and Mary getting mixed up. Mary will pop up somewhere.

Paperboxes would certainly tie in with what my father told me. As for William I will keep looking but it is likely that he joined his sisters after the war instead of dying, which was good for him. :D

Cheers,
David

Hi David,
Do you know William's birthdate? There is a William Duff born 1 Jan 1887 in Dundee who filled out a WWI draft registration card. He was living in Canton, Stark County, Ohio and was a machinist. Any chance he's yours?

Regards,
Sarah

No, never mind, I see he's not. Found one of his voyages from Scotland and he is the son of Alexander Duff living in Kingskettle, Fife. Anyone else want to claim him? :D

William's birthday was 19th Aug. 1884. I found a death index for a William Duff with the same date of birth in Chicago, Cook Co. Illinois. That's what made me wonder if he had not died in WWI but just got wounded. As well as not been able to find any war returns for him.

There is a William Duff on a ship passenger list going to Boston from Glasgow in 1923. The birth date is listed about 1885 (Ok, not perfect) but he has listed as next of kin a Lily Duff living at an address that I recognise. The address is not bang on though and he is living with a cousin whose name I don't recognise, which is causing doubt. Also this William Duff has a scar on his left shoulder (possibly a war wound). He is from Dundee. I need more proof to convince myself.

Cheers,
David

Sorry just seen your post. DD

I was just looking at a record, with terrible handwriting, of a Wm Duff (with tatoos on both arms 8) ), born in Dundee, Mother's name is Helen.
He was coming from Glasgow to New York in 1909.
He was going to a cousin Mrs. Desies (?) (Kate) who was possibly near Cleveland, Ohio.

How many William Duffs ARE there anyway, born in Dundee and going to America??!! :?

Regards,
Sarah

LOL - There are a lot of William Duff's, if my family and ancestors are anything to go by. It seems in every line there is a William.
Researching:
Duff - Perthshire/Dundee/Glasgow
McKendry - Antrim, NI/Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland

I have seven Wiliam Duffs, all in Easter Ross - and they don't even appear at this stage to be related to scoop's family at all!

Best wishes
Lesley
Researching:
Midlothian & Fife - Goalen, Lawrie, Ewart, Nimmo, Jamieson, Dick, Ballingall.
Dunbartonshire- Mcnicol, Davy, Guy, McCunn, McKenzie.
Ayrshire- Lyon, Parker, Mitchell, Fraser.
Easter Ross- McCulloch, Smith, Ross, Duff, Rose.

The William Duff going to Glasgow to Boston in 1923 has a number written beside the entry C/A 11-256292 CN. Anyone tell what this is for? means?

Also there is a stamped date looks like 27 Jan. 194x. Looks like a 1 to me but not sure.

It might provide more clues.
