Just to be a pedant ! My Chambers Dictionary has the following:

Daisy: a translation of the French Marguerite, a Marguerite being the ox-eye daisy or other single chrysanthemum. (Fr., daisy - Gk. margarites, pearl).

In my family there were Margarets known as Maggie, Peggy and Daisy - important when there were so many Margarets about!

And don't forget Rita! My Mum is a Margaret but has always been called Rita, again due to the many Margarets in the family.

Hi there ,
The name Daisy is of Old English origin and its meaning is Days Eye .It is often used as a diminutive for Margaret as in France the Daisy is called a Marguerite .

Hello again,
In one of the above posts its mentioned Polly as a diminutive of Mary . My great aunt was called Polly but christened Mary so I decided to have a look and see if I could find an explaination as to how this came about .It seems Polly is of English and Irish origins and is a varient of Molly which is a diminutive for Mary .All I know is Great Aunt Polly sure kept me busy trying to find her in the BMDs and Census
