Hi Sarah

well they must have gone back to scotland within the year, because one of them had a child in 1905 and the other 1906. so they cant have been there very long.

and then one of them was still having children in slamannan in 1911. to be honest im not sure if they went back to america or not. i have looked and looked and cant find a death for them in scotland, so i thought they might have gone back to america.

thanks again for all your help

karen

Still no luck...

There is such a nice looking David and Jeannette in New York in 1910, with chidren Jenny, Ernest and Emma(?), but he is a ship's carpenter (I believe he was a miner when he came over in 1904?) and in addition, this one is supposed to have come in 1888, with some to-ing and fro-ing because the middle child was born in Scotland and the other two in Connecticut. No good, huh?

Elusive bunch :?

Sarah

Hi karen

You'll find John Sim's death in Dalserf and his wife's death recorded as Clementina Sim mn Fowler (even though the MC has her as Christina) in Dalserf. A son informant on one and a son-in law on the other. Both records available on www.Scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I found them in Dalserf by going for the wife's DC first. With searching on maiden name and maried name and leaving the first name off there were only a handful of likely looking ones and only one that started with a "c". Lucky guess. Knowing Dalserf was quick work to find the right John.

Best wishes
Jean

Glad you're working on the Scottish angle, Jean!
On the other side of the ocean, I finally found James in 1920. Still have no idea what he is indexed as, but I found him from looking for Lawrence Brown (indexed "Brow"). They are still in Stonington, Christian County, Illinois: James, Lizzie and daughter Katie, age 17. Ray is living next door with his wife and son Kenneth. I can't really blame the indexer... the copy is very faint.
Cheers,
Sarah

Oh, and in the Illinois Statewide Death Index 1916-1950, James died at age 70 on Dec 2, 1942 in Stonington Village, Christian County. So he's got to be there in 1930 and I just haven't found him yet...

If you go to the site you will also find what looks to be William's death in 1923 in Christian County also

Okay, there he was indeed in 1930, and there is an interesting twist. I thought I had found him indexed under Jessie Sims, but it turns out that is his sister-in-law Janet, in the same household. They are both widowed. She is the head of household, being independent financially apparently.

Where were she and David all those years?*

Regards,
Sarah

*She (Jessie) was there all the time in 1920 as well, but already widowed, with children William and Agnes. Now I realize I don't know which of the two cousins William died, since the age at death was not given on the index.

2nd edit: Got them finally in 1910, same place, but supposedly born in England. David is still alive then, so he died some time in the next decade.

Hi Sarah

thanks for all the time you are spending trying to help me, its very much appreciated.

all that info seems to be correct. although that is an interesting twist, i did wonder what had happened to david and janet, why does everything have to be so confusing

is there any way you could save the census images and email them to me?

again thanks so much

karen
