Hi Jean,

I grew up in Davenport, Iowa where my Scottish ancestors settled in the 1850's. (Davenport is on the Mississippi River, across from Illinois)

Karen,

Here's the 'base link' for the State of Illinois online databases:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/depar ... bases.html

Hi Mark,

This link doesn't appear to be working for me either, I'm going to go and GOOGLE for it.

Thanks very much to the both of you for finding this for me, the L as a middle name does look promising, doesn't it. Shall keep my fingers crossed that she is mine.

By the way, what sort of info is on American Death certificates?

Hi Marilyn,

This may be the problem. My brother does all the technical stuff with my computer, so will have to wait till next time he comes round.

thanks

US Death Certificates vary from state to state and depending on how old they are.

If this link works for you, you can see an example of a Missouri Death Certificate from 1914. (my great-great-grampa Dyer, from Aberdeen)

http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resource ... all&tYear=

Missouri has an on-line database with actual images of documents. (1910-1955) Some states just have indecies, some states have nothing at all. Like Scotland, only old records are publicly available because of privacy concerns.

If you know the persons name, and when and where they died, you can order copies of death certificates from the state or county government. If the birth / death / marriage record is recent, you have to be a close relative or legal representative of the principles.

I used to have link to a page that in turn had links to each state's Office of Vital Statistics (or its equivalent) but I can't seem to find it now.

If you are interested in a particular state let me know and I can help you find the forms. If you just google the state name followed by 'vital records' you will probably find it.

For Illinois, start with http://www.idph.state.il.us/vitalrecords/index.htm
click on Genealogy.

Good luck!

Thanks Mark,

These last two links work. Thank you for posting the example of the DC.

My brother has just been round and says that MY computer server (OPTUS) says that the domain name www.cyberdriveillinois does not exist. Is there anyone in Australia who is not with OPTUS who can check and see if the link works for them?

thanks

Hi Karen
It does exist - a search on Google for cyberdriveillinois will find it, but it appears to be down just now (well, its not working for me - it may be different in different parts of the world?).... perhaps take note of the URL fro now, and hope that is is back up soon.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Yes, I googled on it earlier in the day and tried without success and then Marilyn tried and got on. When I say it does not exist I mean that that is what MY computer server is telling me. I dont understand the technicalities of it, but that is how my brother explained it to me. Marilyn is in America, I wonder if they are the only ones who can access the site?
