This has been amazing. So much information.

I'm still trying to get my head round the fact that she might have married her uncle!

If I do find the connection, I will post it here when I find out.

Thanks again Sarah

This may be John in the Montana Death Index. The birth year is a bit off and it doesn't tell the county, so it's hard to be sure. But this is the mostly likely one I saw.

Montana Death Index, 1907-2002

Name: John Swan
Age: 74
Estimated birth year: 1861
Gender: Male
Death Date: 15 Aug 1935
Index Number: Bl 1376

It looks like John and Hannah didn't waste much Time! Hannah arrived in New York in June 1909 and Mary was born in April 1910!

This gets more interesting by the minute!

Not surprisingly, John was married before. He was already widowed by 1900 and living with what appears to be the widower of one of his daughters:

1900
Helena, Lewis & Clark County, Montana
Meaney, Patrick, Head, born Mar 1860 in Massachusetts, widower, Mine Owner
___William, Son, born May 1883 in Montana, Clerk in RR office
___Bertha, Daughter, born October 1884 in Montana, Student
Swan, Jno, Father-in-law, born Sep 1858 in Scotland, widower, Engineer Stationary
___Jane J, Sister-in-law, born Oct 1881 in Dakota, Saleswoman in Dry Goods

Hi Bill,
I'm looking for John in 1880 and the only likely one is in Iowa. Next door is a Peter Swan-- ring a bell? In John's household is also a "half-brother" named George McDonald. Does this seem like the right family?

Also, where would he have been born in Scotland?

I realize it's getting quite late where you are... so maybe we'll resolve this tomorrow! :D

Just had a quick look at the IGI and Hannah did have an uncle by the name of John Swan, but he was born in 1838 So it looks like the John she married may have been a cousin.

I suppose there is the possibility that he wasn't related at all. Or is that wishfull thinking?

Depends on how keen you are to have scandal in the family

Hi Sarah

Uncle John was born in Rhynd in Perthshire. Not sure where cousin John was born? (if he was a cousin) Would assume it was also Perthshire?

I haven't done much research on the Swan's, but it looks like I will be now!

To be honest, the answer to your question is, I don't know. I will check the IGI tomorrow and see what I can find.

All this has been worth stayning up for!

Oh, I don't mind a scandal from 100 years ago!

As I said before, this is the best gossip I've had on any of the family!

This is terrific, you have really made my day.
